    After market Nav/Stereo

    Hi All LR Heads,

Quick question for any D3 owners out there, has anyone replaced the standard radio/phone section in the dash with an aftermarket double din receiver or Navigation unit, if so is it done with ease or something more complicated, also what about the controls on the steering wheel are these able to be integrated?

Looking at something like the below and if it is worth the money to get retro fitted over finding an HSE with the Nav Unit?

I put one in my RRS (I say "I", a shop did it). There's a fitting kit available, not that hard to do. I think there's a youtube vid if you search there.
As for the steering wheel controls, wave them goodbye
I went with an Orion nav/dvd/bluetooth unit as it has DAB+, not essential for everyone (especially if you live outside the city) but I like it.
I'll post up a pic here when I get home, looks good to me

There are heaps of threads on this so do a search.

    In summary.

With the base level radio - can be swapped with no major issues.

Mid Spec and top spec are more problematic if full functionality is to be retained. Can be done with a unit has on toad nav included but if something like Ozi -Explorer for offroad nav is required (Win CE operating system) then there are issues with full functionality. Some people mount the original radio in the rear somewhere so the CANBUS thinks it is still there and mount anoter stand alone radio in the dash.

Basically steering wheels controls to control the car's instrument computer system may or may not work.

Great Rohan, I'd love to see a pic.

Yep searching away Garry, thanks for the steer.

I am actually keen on a fully functional, DVD/Blue tooth/NAV/media centre/ touch screen and anything else techie I can think of, in the form of maybe a DNX990HD, not sure if we can get Aussie maps or even bush maps and what the process would be to change it. The previous added is the only AUS NAV unit Kenwood make by the looks.

The optioned NAV unit any good on the D3's, and is it worth the extra ticket price?

Brilliant, thanks Garry. I think I have found a good way to spend the last afternoon at this job! Love a bit of research!

I was told by the dealership never to touch the sound system. His exact words "If you don't like the sound system, don't by the car". It was a funny comment but I seriously want better speakers for my D3. Though it has HK speaker system factory installed in it. I still think there are better aftermarket ones that i would like to get. Is this really possible? Are the electronics way too complicated that its not worth the risk? Is there a shop that specialises on D3 sounds / electronics within Sydney/NSW?

    Hi,
I have replaced my sound system with a double din unit and it has been great. Wagga Car Radio ( in Wagga Wagga NSW.) did the work. I have a D3s

jinx - yes, there are better speakers out there - better than the ones in the top of the link HK setup. Be prepared, however, to pay for them.

Can the HK setup be upgraded - yes. There are posts in the disco3.co.uk site where people have taken output from factory/HK amps - fed them into a processor, and then into an aftermarket amp... then off to aftermarket speakers. Again - not cheap, but possible.

Regarding a shop that specialises in D3 - there are not enough done to stay in business. Best to pick a good stereo install shop - like FHRX at Caringbah. Marty Price is the owner/manager and they are considered the best in Sydney.

    Cheers,
    Rob

A few companies are starting to bring Can-bus adapters to the market now also.

The stereo, even base model, is Can-bus controlled.
