    Halogen Hi Beams

Has anyone upgraded their Halogen Hi Beams with one on the newer brighter, higher temp and higher wattage H7 globes.

What is the max wattage you can go without the Canbus having a hissie fit.

    Thanks

But you still have Halogens in your Hi Beam spot so that the dark spots in your hi beam Xenons get filled in.

I swapped for Phillips CrystalVision 100W - no issues in 2 years.

    Cheers,

Thanks Gordon - did you run them via a relay direct from the battery or just plug them in? If just plugged in, I take it that the canbus did not have a hissy fit.

I have been looking these newer brand name halogens and some are claiming up to 150% more light but still on 55w while other light yours are raising the wattage.

I have 55w HIDs in my high beams at the moment and the light is great but they do take a little while to light up - not an issue on country roads but when you live in a big country town like Canberra - even out of town there are too many cars and hi beams that take a while to light up are next to useless - especially when you think you have spotted a roo on the side of the road outside Julia's place.

    Cheers

No, I replaced the whole light assembly with the BiXenon unit

As Garry said, bixenons units still have a halogen high beam as "fill" lights. Read the thread about "possum spotters" in D4's and you'll get the idea. The D3 bixenon was a great design, whereas the D4 one was designed by Stevie Wonder.

It is as I indicated - the BiXenons (HID globe) are in the outer light fitting (the projector one). It is a single H7 HID globe and Hi/Low beam is achieved by the use of a shutter in the housing that moves to change the beam from Hi to lo and vice versa. Hence no delay when switching from lo to hi as the globe is already lit. In addition there is a H7 Halogen globe on the inner (non projector) position which fills in the Hi beam HID pattern from the other light.

On the standard Halogen light fittings, the same housing is used at the BiXenons but it does not have the shutter mechanism. The basic system there is a low beam single H7 halogen in the projector and the same halogen globe as used in the BiXenon system in the other no projector lamp is the high beam.

The principle is correct but the HID globe is not H7.
