How NOT to use your Land Rover as a boat!

Have a look at this guy from 14:00.

By the looks of it he was lucky to drive it out.

Was the rear end floating when in the deep stuff?
If so, it was too well sealed to be a Land Rover

I find it interesting how easily some vehicles float. I had a 75 series troop carrier that I had water over the bonnet frequently. It was like a rock on the bottom. I'd keep the momentum up slightly and water would push up to the windscreen but it never came in the cab.

    Happy Days.

I thought the brochures showed it to be water proof for 30 minutes at 700mm ?
Might be advertising hipe....don't want to test that theory. Especially if I was in the water for 31 minutes!

That was the design brief, but it was for static conditions. Driving in many situations would force water along and through the firewall bung-holes etc.

    Cheers,

When he opened the back door water flowed out. If it floated initially, it wouldn't be for long.

Having said that, look at all the vehicles floating around in footage of the Japanese tsunami. You can see instances of people just sitting in their cars and appearing to ride it out as the vehicle just floats away.

Well I thnk he has a Land Rover RAI and not a snorkel, I suspect the air filter partially clogged with water reducing the airflow to the engine and resulting in ony partially burnt diesel and thus black smoke. Very lucky he must have been damn close to sucking enough water in to hydraulically damage the engine.
