    D3 TLC at MR auto

    Well time for the D3 to have a bit of attention as it was due for servicve and timing belt.

    All previouse servicing was done by the dealer in Brisbane while the car was on lease. Now I am taking it to MR Auto at Redcliffe.

    - Service
    - timing belt
    - replace fluids in diffs and tranfter case
    - new pads and rotors to rear

    Still need to replace the compressor but will have to save my pennies for that.

    There are two belts.

    What about a freshen up of the gearbox oil?

    was done by the dealer just before it came off lease including the steel pan conversion

    Whats wrong with the air compressor?

    I am talking to Dwayne at MR to get the correct part in stock.

    I'll advise the forum when I have an AU part no for the kit.

    it is the usaul amber warning light suspension fault caused by the compressor.

    I have ordered the valve rebuild kit P/N LR020590 from the dealer for $15 plus GST.

    Will order some silica gel off fleabay and see if that works for a bit.

    Worth spending $25 as opposed to a grand!

    To regenerate the silica gel simply pour it through a sieve (large kitchen strainer is ideal! and shake out the "fines" ...powdery bits... and spread the large crystals "rocks" on a baking tray and heat them in the oven (fan forced is good) at 80-90 degC for 2 hrs. Turn the oven off and let the whole lot cool to room temp. Put the silica gel back in the dryer and refit. Because the relative humidity in the oven is virtually "zero" it's better to let it cool in there rather than in the open where it will absorb moisture from the atmosphere.

    Also, try not to 'tumble' the silica gel too much, otherwise it will powder...not good for the compressor or valve block etc. Make sure the filter papers in the dryer or whatever they use are clean and free of powder.

    There is almost no limit to the number of times you can regenerate silica gel in this manner... (standard practice in the science lab I toiled in as a lad! )

    BTW: while silica gel itself is non toxic, some commercial forms of it are coloured with cobalt salts used as an indicator of effectiveness (blue when it's dry, pink when it's damp). OK but not to be ingested. The standard stuff in the dryer seems to be untreated whilte stuff.

    MR completed all the work as specified, the D3 is running a lot smoother and is a pleasure to drive.

    Brakes were quite spongy but are now fine as the pads and rotors are starting to bed in.

    Impressed by their attention to detail in going over the car and doing the TLC these cars need and dealers don't touch as it is not in the log book service.

    Compressor: I picked up the valve rebuild kit yesterday, under $20 and will pull the silica beads, dry as per earlier post and refit with the new vale parts. Hopefully that will cure it for a while.

    Have noticed that when there is less humidity in the air that is does not fail anywhere near as much. As Brisbane is having one of it's worse seasons for thunderstorms the relative humidity most days is very high.

    Anyway fingers crossed.

    still have not done the rebuild on the compressor but that is on my to do list for this week after the yard gets mowed!

    I can report the D3 is running very sweetly after teh MR TLC, not sure what they tweaked but I am getting about 850km to a tank of combined cycle driving.

    Got to be happy with that!!
