    D4 on Fraser Island

A fine place to clock over 100,000km in the D4, enjoying an inland track on Fraser Island.

Haven't seen another D4 or D3 on the island yet, only 1 RRS towing a camper trailer when we arrived a couple of days ago.

I've found the Mud/Ruts setting surprisingly useful on the inland tracks to deal with the sections of bumps and humps, even in soft sand, to give finer throttle control while easing over the rough bits. Rock Crawl was also useful for the descent into Kingfisher Bay and the climb back out. Plenty of people were commenting about how rough this section is and how many times they bottomed out but it didn't bother the D4 one little bit, actually quite enjoyable. They're starting work today for the next 3 months to seal this staircase.

I've also found that I prefer using low range on the inland tracks, as the ratios are closer together and more useful within the speed limit of 30km/h. I was manually shifting between Low 4, 5 and 6 but after a while I just left it in Drive and I was impressed with how well the auto consistently picked the right gear and when to change up and down, both in Sand and Mud/Ruts.

Enjoying putting the D4 to some good use with the family. Woke to a chorus of dingos howling this morning.

Very nice. I hope the track out of kingfisher doesn't degrade like the high tide track at the south of the island.

We went over for just the 1 day on Sat 30th March. We followed a td5 onto the island & saw a white Discovery 4 HSE going the opposite way on the beach, and that was it. It was very busy on the beach & at Eli Creek, but the tracks were pretty quiet.

    Regards,

    Les.

Thanks for the info Beamin. I'll be heading there with my D3 at the start of May. Do you know if they have closed the track to Kingfisher or will it be open while they do repairs?

Track will remain open with some sort of gate system and traffic control. The online Fraser Island conditions update has details but the description is pretty vague.

Went for a long drive along the eastern beach yesterday and still no sighting of another D4 or D3. Freeway surface for most of it. Turned off all TR special programs and cruised at (ahem) freeway speed for some parts.

The eastern beach has lost a lot of sand to erosion from Cyclone Sandy swell so it's quite a bit lower than normal. This makes the low tide timing critical in quite a few places so our enjoyment of Champagne Pools was limited to 40 minutes to be able to make the return trip before being cut off. Well worth the trip though.

Tyres at 20psi seem to handle everything here without difficulty, although I'm cautious of tree roots on the tracks. 19" Cooper Zeons

Bingo! It's taken until day 6 but finally spotted another D4 on Fraser today. Not a single D3.

Very happy with how well the car has made easy work of everything we've encountered in a week of exploring here, a surprising variety of challenges.

    Hey Mate,

I've got a 2009 SE in Stornoway Grey....was loving the fact that way back then there were next to no D4s around...stares..people coming over for a chat...even Toyo owners .

First trip in 2010 to Fraser Is.....I drive pass another Stornoway Grey D4 near Orchid Beach..damn it, the only other D4 I saw on the Island...same colour, same model.....LOL!!!!
