The idler/tensioner on the multi-rib fan belt is the most vulnerable to dust and moisture but don't know if they generally give trouble on these motors.
This trip is turning into one thing after the next !
Have noticed a slight wine in the motor normally noticed on a trailing throttle, definitely motor goes up and down with revs. Been apparent now for a while ( probably 5-8000klms).
I was hoping the new alternator would have fixed it but not so and it is now getting quite noticeable.
Was out at Davis performance Landys yesterday but of course it was fine then - no noise, it started again on the way back,
Anyone any suggestions ? Is there an idler bearing or the like in belts on the motor somewhere ?

Yes, check the main belt idler/ tensioner bearing, power steering pump and also the A/C compressor clutch. I have just done a power steering pump in a D3 (What a total horror of a job) because it was whining under steering load and revs, and I could move the pulley in and out by hand
, and also noticed the A/C compressor bearing was rumbling, and produced a similar whine to an alternator bearing when revved hard. The compressor clutch bearing is replaceable, BUT there are none in Australia. I tried everyone. Apart from $650 for a used A/C compressor to rob the clutch off I have to wait 8 days VOR to recieve a $200 part that takes less than an hour to replace.
Come on landrover, these are cheap parts to keep in stock in the dealer network, and since the first D3 was released in 2005 they should be a stock item by now
This is a well known issue in the UK also.

However, to be fair Ron, from the title of the thread, it seems he was really only interested in the pronunciation, not the spelling.![]()

diagnosis of my whine recently was done with a long screw driver used as a stethoscope
I needed a glass of wine after the cost of replacing the AC compressor which is whining about my whine with wine![]()
Coming up to TerryO's yesterday the wine ? whine ? Stops when the a/con is switched off !
Don't anyone even thing about telling me what they cost, but if someone has one they aren't using I will get it out of their way - gratefully.

P.S. getting embarrassed about the wine in the heading can anyone fix it ?
