If you are looking at bike carriers for on-road, then I have the following to offer the conversation...
The Yakima brand of racks does anti-rattle by having a threaded bolt and in the hitch mount of the bike itself (ie not the hitch receiver) has a threaded opening. As you tighten the bolt it pulls the square hitch tight against the side of the hitch receiver. This has worked well for me.
The higher end Thule bike racks have an expanding hitch arrangement whereby when you tighten the mounting knob, the hitch itself expands to fit the hitch receiver hole.
