    tyre changing

    Thanks Tony,
I intend to carry as spare carcass on the roof as well as 19" is not available outback.

You are sound in your advice, but I tried using Tyre Pliers on a D2 rim in the Simpson a few years ago and I was hopeless at it could not break the bead.

Also Can Tyre pliers etc change a 19" rim?

all suggestions how to acquire the skill greatly appreciated.

    Brian,
D2 alloys are notoriously hard to break the bead on, tyre pliers don't cut it, also the safety bead is very high around most of the rim, there is a low spot at the valve that is were you need to break the bead.

I would guess that the lower the tyre profile the tyre the harder it will be to change manually, but I don't really know, I have only done low tech one like on my old 130.

If you have a tame tyre place or if you are getting tyres before you go, then get them to show you the best why to strip one down.

Have a look at this thread, it's about D2/Defender alloys. I don't know if it will be much use for your 19s.

    Bead breaking 19 inch

Just back from Simpson changed 5 -19 inch tyres used high lift jack to break the beads then long tyre leavers not the super cheap type . To replace used tyre leavers till just the last part then pressed the last part of the tyre on with the high lift jack .used aero start to set the bead job done.
Reason for so many tyre was stones would get between the rim and the calliper and break the rim so I would take the extra rim IMHO

hi Wal_rat, i am keen also to hear if that was 5 broken wheels or tyres or flats? I am planning on a desert trip in August with my RRS, and have been in two minds about the entire tyre/rim problem.. I'd love to hear the problems you had?

As it is a D3, you could also get 18" LR wheels off fleabay or gumtree.

19 inch vs 18 inch rims Disco 3 HSE

I have always read that HSE has larger Brembro? disc brakes and unless you buy modifieds 18 inch will not fit?

Modifieds void warranty and perhaps Insurance being a GP i am paranoid about voiding Tassies Motor accident patient third party cover and converting it to sue the supposedly ,Dr who can afford it!
