Upper tailgate - mind of its own?
When the (D3 2005 V8 HSE) wants to it just wont open the tailgate.
It seems to be the top section only. once this opens the bottom button works fine.
I believe it to be the actuator which will work OK but tne not at all .
By holding in both Lock and Unlock on the dash for a few secs the top rear section 'pops' open to the saftey point and will then (again sometimes) open.
Does anyone know the part number of the upper tailgate actuator, or point me to a process for replacement .. that way when I get the part number, and have the part on hand, when I go to do the job, AND the car agrees, I will get into it.
Patience is a virtue with the electronics of the D3 it seems.
Many thanks for any assistance.

There is heaps of information about the tail gate on this forum. Seems an inevitable fix all Discos will need at some time.
When mine went it started playing up like you describe. Sometimes working, sometimes not.
Turned out on mine the mechanism had not failed (but was in the process of failing and was replaced) but it was the solenoid that was knackered giving the feeling of faulty intermittent electrics.
Once replaced it now opens with a much more powerful and quick action.
It was all covered under my extended warranty.

It's also worth just checking that the switch isn't faulty...

Well the same thing happened to me today.
Pressing the rear upper tailgate release button produced no response at all. No sound at all. Having just returned from a big trip and about to take the rear drawers out was thinking the worst, working out how best to cut the drawers up. Tried the "lock" ,"unlock" buttons on the dash and yes the upper tailgate did unlock to safety position but could still not be opened. Worked out that yes it did unlock but about 1 sec later it then locks again.
Had to get SWMBO to pull tailgate open as I pressed the buttons.
Questions: Is this normally a 2 person operation, and is a faulty switch the most likely cause, or are there other possible causes.
PS. It is not the L shaped catch on the end of the cable as this has been re-enforced.

logical breakdown of components
I have yet to have repaired, but will as soon as time permits.
- The two dash buttons pressed in unison open the top tailgate with a resounding solenoid klunk.. I would say the solenoid is fine(Guess only)
- The rear hatch button essentially does the same thing, but from a switch in the handle, its my guess this switch is the faulty part.as it only intermittently activates the solenoid (which is 100% reliable when activated from the dash)
- The bottom half of the tailgate is a separate switch at the top of the bottom tailgate half and is not involved at this time, as we ain't got to that function yet.
This rear tailgate handle switch is the one I will be going fo when I get on the job.
I can't find the part No but I guess the blokes at britishoffroad will soon tell me ..
Looking forward to a little more reliability in this minor component of the 'magic bus' or is it 'Darth Fridge'.
