Gee mate......you are having such an awful run.
I hope it gets sorted and you only ever need normal servicing from then on.
Brett....
I love my RRS 3.0 (2010 model). But...
The very accommodating service people at Barbagallo Land Rover have just told me they need to remove the whole body (again) and replace the primary turbo. Okay, it's still under warranty, but this is becoming very er...inconvenient.
As long term members will know, LR replaced my engine with a new one in July last year (at 31,000km) after six months of trying to fix the blue smoke problem in vain. (Body off twice, turbo replaced twice. Still not fixed.)
Last week, at 46,000 (only 15,000km on the new engine) the car suddenly developed a distinct, high-pitched whine under acceleration. It died off as soon as I backed off the throttle. Initially I thought it might be a gearbox problem, but Barbagallo's chief technician picked it as a primary turbo whine as soon as he test drove it this morning. Result: order new turbo, and they'll let me know when they need it. For a week.
Question: have any other aulro members experienced this (apparently known) turbo issue on early-build 3.0 motors? And, when the new RRS appears, should I give up on the 3.0 and wait for the 4.4V8 to appear in 2014?
Any input appreciated....
PS: thankfully, I bought an extended warranty through to June 2016.

Hi Brett, I guess I just got a bit unlucky with mine. Love 'em though, just the best cars on the road, and I'll buy another one for sure.
Can't fault the LR dealer service though. They are right onto it. Spurred on, no doubt, by the big invoices they get to send to LR for warranty work:-)
One of my best friends recently bought a V6 diesel Touareg. I drove it. It's....er...nice.
In a bland, beige, banal, perfect VW kind of way. Just doesn't have the kerb presence of the RR.
I have a Toaureg and D4. The Touareg does everything as it should....without any issues at all.
Two very different cars.
I drive my Touareg for work during the week, and the D4 on the weekends. D4 puts a smile of my dial.
I think both the D4 and Touareg look great.....but agreed the RRS has the real prestige presence.
Brett...
Yep, no question the VW is excellent. I'd like to have a crack at the souped up diesel version they released recently.
And I could be pretty sure there wouldn't be the same issues with the VeeDub as I've had with the Rangie.
I test drove a 4.2 V8 diesel two weeks ago.....I initially said no to the test drive when they Skipper VW called me, but curiosity go the better of me.
Holy #%^* it was quick. Had Vic plates so may have been doing the rounds.
But no thanks.....don't want to spend any more on cars.
Brett....
I spent 15k more to buy an RRS over a T2 3.0TDI. The VW is no doubt a great car but I have to echo what everyone else says on here... the RRS has so much more presence! Better standard kit too and better for off roading. I've had mine at some pretty weird angles and no creaks at all through the car thanks to body+chassis design. Couldn't say the same for many other cars I've driven. You have to think over time that creaking leads to cracking.
Anyway my question was more that since OP has had such a run with his turbos, could it be something to do with the way the car is driven?
ie, is the car allowed to warm up before boosting
-is the car driven on long runs primarily or short
-hard or nana driving style or somewhere in between
-service history etc
-ever used two stroke in her?
I'm thinking maybe carbon buildup causing issues with sticking vanes or fouling seals that then leads to other issues. The whining would seem to point to bearing wear, which at such a low mileage would indicate a possible lubrication issue.
You would think that if the primary turbo had been replaced three times now, they would've had a fair idea of why these units are failing so rapidly.
I had an Audi B5 S4 before my RRS, which is notorious for turbo failure, and they did fail, at 235,000km. I've heard of the turbo on the 2.7 lasting over 400K MILES (Character on disco3.com) although that arguably was a car that was being used in the best conditions for turbo life.
Hi Rich, I don't think it can be blamed on any particular driving style. I don't drive the car hard at all.
It's had a combination of short city runs and long (very long) outback runs - lots of short trips to work and back, interspersed with long runs south and north, Gibb River Rd, Cape Leveque, Exmouth etc, over its entire life, as well as towing over long distances (boat, camper trailer).
No, I haven't tried two-stroke:-)
The chief tech at Barbagallo assures me it is a known turbo lubrication issue which has subsequently been addressed and fixed by LR on this model. But it begs the question, they had the body off three times last year (twice to replace turbos, third time to replace engine) so I wonder why the turbo issue wasn't fixed at the same time.
You are so right - they went to to the expense and effort of finally replacing the engine. You would think they would have made sure that the turbo mod was in place wouldn't you?
I hope they sort it out once and for all Greg. Your loyalty is to be commended!
Cheers,
Sean
