Ok, so after 3 weeks with the Disco sitting in the driveway, and countless posts in here and elsewhere, and 400 bucks on a new key
oh and more than 40 phone calls to various Land Rover specialists

The problem has turned out to be the alarm receiver inside the vehicle.

anyone else familiar with this issue?
