I'll also be looking at the D697 in both LT245/70-17 (LI 114) & LT265/65-17 (LI 116). However as this set of tyres will be for general use rather than tough off-road work I will be favouring a softer non-LT ride than provided by the Yoko AT/S in LT245/70-17 (LI 119) with their 3 ply sidewalls. This set of tyres will be well and truly worn-out before the Duratracs so wont need to withstand any particularly rocky conditions.

I would expect the HT Contis to be high speed, high grip with a softer compound than their ATs so discount the high HT wear rate especially considering the kms others have done on their ATs.

Edit: The 265/65-17 Contis may be off my list because their max pressure is only 44 psi which is low compared with XL tyres with the same load rating.

I had Continental Cross Contact AT's 255/60R18 fitted in Oct 2010. I've done 80,000+ K's since and they still have plenty left. I must admit I change to a set of Muds if I intend any serious stuff, but they have been in the dirt many times.

They hum a little on the road - but not obtrusively. Good road manners especially in the wet. Good also in light to medium off roading - haven't tried them in the serious stuff.

    I'd buy them again

What's the max pressure on the sidewall?

Might be pretty high with an aspect of 80.
    And they are over 34".
What are they fitted to ?

I read what I expected to be written...

44 in the rear of a loaded D3/4 doesn't seem enough and although I've not had my current LT tyres that high, my loaded-up D2 did. I suspect the 255/60-18 will be 50/51 psi.

You're right of course - they're the standard size 255/60R18. It'd be nice to be able to fit a tyre that tall on the D3. Typo corrected in original post!

    Sidewall max pressure 350KPa / 51psi, max load 1120Kg / 2469lb

I would like to know in what way a tyre rated at 1120 kg at 51 psi max pressure differs from one rated at 1120 kg at 44 psi max pressure. The XL rating that seems to go hand in hand with the higher max pressure but if both tyres are rated for the same load, is the lower pressure one less suitable or unsuitable for a D3/4? Perhaps the SL tyre wont like extended use near the max load whereas the XL one doesn't mind so much.

I've decided to give these a go in 265/65-17. Max pressure on my D4's placard is 42 psi so 44 should be OK. This size is currently at a special price from certain outlets co-incidental with Continental having a 4 for 3 deal for a couple of other of their tyres. I may not fit them for a couple of months depending from where they come.

Edit: $217 ea delivered to local depot and $10 F&B local Kmart who can't get near the price, along with other local outlets.

Time will tell if I've made the right decision going away from an LT tyre for everyday use. Today one Yoko LT was scrapped because a 100mm+ length of old fence wire had some time ago penetrated the edge of the tread and its free end has since been gouging away at the sidewall. With so much old fence wire lying about the P-rated Contis might get tested.

I've never found skinny tyres to be wanting where I've been but these 265/65-17 Contis with only 15mm wider tread and 10mm greater section width than the current 245/70-17 certainly look better. Their tread width is on par with the 3/4 worn 255/55-19 Pirelli ATR stacked in the shed. The old tyres still have a bit more to give so don't have an opinion on these yet other than that the tops of the sidewalls are quite soft.
