Do yourself a favor take the Standard hitch and throw it as far as you can and fit one of these.

Still getting to know my second hand D4. Starting looking at the hitch that came with the car. It seems that the previous owner wasn't too careful and the small locking key has broken off in the lock! good news I can still turn from locked to unlocked but it doesn't seem to stop my turning the large green mechanism. Is it meant to when in the locked position?
That and I need a new bolt mechanism to hold the hitch in as I had to cut the old one off due to him loosing that key!

Yes, the knob goes in when locked; to unlock, pull out and turn (doesn't turn unless you pull out, as I found after using it for the first time).
Should be easy getting a new pin (I assume that's what you mean) for the receiver to lock the hitch in; they are inexpensive.

Thanks I played with the mechanism on the garage floor for a while to figure it out. A replacement pin for the tongue starts from $10 from local auto parts store.

had a similar issue about a couple of weeks ago...the green handle will turn both in locked and unlocked position when pulled outwards, however, when in locked position, the handle will not release the latch all the way, it will only go to a certain point. Thats how it is in the D3.

If the remains of the key are still in the locking mechanism you might be able to use a screwdriver to turn the key to the unlocked position and fully rotate the locking mechanism to get the hitch out. The one in the D3 has jammed several times, once yhe key is in the unlock position and the mechanism rotated it needs a couple of taps with a hammer to free it.
I actutually tap the hitch into the pocket to dislodge it. Although I apply a film of grease to help prevent it sticking, we live in a pretty harsh environment...
