Has anyone found a good way to update satnav?

The factory satnav on my 2010 D4 is now hopelessly out of date. The local Land Rover dealer's staff informed me that the dealership would gladly purchase a software key from Land Rover on my behalf and then upload the latest version of the maps. It turns out the latest version is 2011. The cost of this exercise is $495 for the software key, and then additional labour from the dealer (at $165/hr !) to install the software.

I have decided to give up on the satnav system until a more attractive proposition becomes apparent. Has anyone has found a satisfactory approach to updating the map software?

Pros and cons ..... and a very well run discussion.

Some folks like the integration which includes their phone, their 4WD screen, their music, etc, etc. It's in the car, doesn't have to be removed and so on.

Some new systems encompass all of that and I think can even be fitted to the same area in the car.

Some folks are happy to have something stuck on their windshield.

It seems that non genuine are easier and cheaper to update and are 'more capable'.....surprise, surprise.

Some folks just scratch their head at this extra capability as they just want a 'map' and guidance....which I think the LR one does.

    So, horses for courses.

If you want to stay with the OEM....I don't believe there is a cheap way to do it....well not legally.

I don't know about 2011 for the latest version....are you talking about when they got the data or when it was released? My Merc is 2011 and doesn't show streets in newer estates around my area. The loaner Jag that I have right now appears to be far more up to date and I think the OEM systems all use the same database.

    Cheers.

Use the GPS on your phone through your sound system. Just ensure you have your phone in a manufactured craddle. That way you get the best of both worlds. Most Smart Phone GPS have free upgrades for maps.
