"Tell 'im he's dreaming" - 20inch wheels on the Gibb?

Hi guys, next year we're planning to re-visit the Gibb River Rd and assorted side-tracks. I've just replaced the RRS with a 2012 Vogue, with a spare set of standard 20 inch wheels and tyres (255/50/20 Continentals). We'll be towing a 1200kg camper trailer.
I'd REALLY like to avoid buying a set of 6 Cooper LTZs and see if I can get by with a couple of spare Continentals...but am I dreaming? Has anybody done any moderate off-road work with the standard tyres?
Did the trip a couple of years ago with Goodyear MTR 19s on the RRS and they were fine, but noisy as hell. I guess I'm just being a cheapskate, given any A/T tyres I get will spend another year or so sitting in the garage after the trip.

(And while on the subject of trips, does anybody have an expedition roof rack for a Vogue they might want to sell or hire for the trip?)

I'm no tyre & rim expert but Ive done the GRR quite a few times now and while it can depend on when the road was last graded it does seem to be a pretty good quality nowadays. As for the offshoot tracks you will need to be gentle with the rims, as I'm sure you will be.

I've found he tracks up to Lennard Gorge and Barnett Gorge to be pretty brutal and there is some rim munching opportunities there. Which is a pity because Barnett Gorge is my favourite bush camp spot on the GRR

Not GRR but the road into the Bungles has been an absolute pig every time Ive done it and the destination is not worth the effort (there Ive said it).

You've got two spare rims and tyres, you'll pack a repair kit, I reckon you'll be fine if youre aware.

Greg, re the rack - I reckon you might be better off (in terms of speed of finding something) looking for two or even three cross bars (Ebay etc) and a platform style rack (pioneer etc). That was the set up I was thinking of for our trip next year - not sure Vogue expo racks will be very common out there!

I took a lifted Kingswood in there about 12-13 years ago. The road was rough, but I thought the destination was well worth it. Camped at one end and did a walk there, then went to the other end for another walk and headed back out.

I suppose that is one of those tracks that varies a lot from time to time, but a couple of decades ago, my Series III thought it was a pretty good track and I thought places like Cathedral Gorge, Echidna Chasm and Frog Hollow were well worth the effort.

On the subject of 20" tyres, I would have thought that an important consideration was the likelihood of being able to get a replacement in the event of a tyre being destroyed. Late last century, 750x16s were readily available.

Yeah I think you're right James. It does seem silly to go out and spend thousands on new tyres for what could be a one-off need. A bit of care, two spares and a repair kit should do the job.
Worst case, we'll be travelling with a Toe-Rag shod with compatible tyres, a bit of cannibalisation goes a long way:-)

Yeah I think I'll do the same Chris. I'm only going to be carrying a spare wheel/tyre, maybe a jerry can or two and a shovel up there, that's about it.

Done a lot of travel off the bitumen in mine, and it has bog stock cheapo 20" road tyres on it, and I've never had an issue - touch wood...

Been in the bush, through the mud, across 100's of KM of sand and dirt tracks. I've always driven it carefully knowing what I was driving on, but all good. Rocky tracks make me pucker up a bit, but nothing buggered so far...

    You'll be fine.

    Cheers - Gav

Are you planning on taking a diagnostic tool of some sort so you can read and clear any faults if need be?

Might be an idea, cause no one else out there within kooee will have one.
    Cheers,
    Terry
