    D3 Dreaded Handbreak Screeeeeech

Just started getting the Dreaded Handbreak Screeeeeech every now and then and got a quote for the repair!!

To replace the handbrake module, rear pads rotors and sensor would be $2150.00.

After picking mysely up off the floor I have two questions:

    1. Do you need to replace the rear pad rotors and sensors?
    2. Is this the going rate / a fair price??

It might just need a clean up and adjustment if it's having to pull the cable to far to apply the brake.

If you go onto disco3.co.uk and register, then search for bodsys brake bible, you can download a pretty good manual on how to fit/adjust the brakes on the D3.

Being new to my D3 I used it to put my new discs and pads on and it was all pretty easy to foloow the adjustment process.

The other question is - does the module really need replacing? I had mine replaced a couple of years ago, it had really gone bust - cost then was about $1700 for the module only. No other brake work was necessary or done.
I make sure that the handbrake is adjusted at each service now.
    Cheers

This happened to me last Easter.
Just found the invoice it was 2.4K to have fixed. That included the labour.
Replaced all components, handbrake cable, discs, and shoes.

I wonder how many people actually use their hand brakes once they start to make the dreaded noise?

I know one thing, don't put your hand brake on when your off road on an uneven surface at off road height plus with Llams set on max. ... ...it doesn't like it at all.
    Cheers,
    Terry

If they want to charge you that much and haven't done clean and adjust first then maybe you should take it elsewhere.

I agree with CaverD3, I have had the problem a couple of times. Each time I took it to the mechanic and he cleaned out the drums and the problem went away.

Folks, Just thought I would add my experience. I used the auto release feature on the park brake in my D3 MY09 lots. It also got the screech, locked on brakes etc and had to use the emergency cable release a few times. Got it repaired and at the time had a chat with the Land Rover mechanic. He advised that using the Auto Release feature was the main cause for the wear of the brakes, apart from road grime. Since then I have avoided using the auto release feature except when it really enhances safety etc. As I live on a small farm and its fairly flat, I also just use the gearbox park feature when parked and locked up at home. I am aware that's illegal to do that on public roads, so when out I (mostly) still use the PB and the Gearbox Park. Since 2010 the PB has not been an issue since I stopped using the auto release feature as much as I used to. It sort of makes sense that the PB would wear very slowly if the car is stationary when its applied or released and would probably experience increased wear during the early moments of the auto release cycle when that feature is used.
