    Question 17 / 18 inch wheels

    Hi
Just started planning a Gibb River trip for next year and after input re the suitability of using a standard D4 18 inch rim as a extra spare with our set of 17 inch rims.
We replaced the 18's with a set of 5 x D3 17's but kept the 18's for future use. Not sure if we can get a BFG A/T for the 18 that will give us the same rolling diameter as the BFG A/T's we are running on the 17's.
We would obviously use the 18 as a second spare only when required to get out of trouble.
We will be towing a 15'6" Trakmaster van, but it only has 15' wheels so don't have the use of its spares as a back up.
    Any input appreciated.

    Cheers
    Mike L

Or what i did on our last desert trip, took a tyre of the same size, picked a couple up second hand, almost new.

I thought this would be a better option than the 18' i have under the house, and also save some weight.

As an answer to your question,if both have the same or very similar rolling diameter you should be OK,although legalities may be an issue.

I normality take tyre carcasses rather than complete wheels to keep the weight down when more than one spare may be needed and like scary has mentioned you can pick up second hand ones in good nick cheap.

If you have the 265/65R18 AT KO (diameter 801.7 mm), then 265/70R17 are close enough (802.8 mm).

    17 / 18 inch spares

    Hi Graeme
We are running BFG A/T LT265/65R17's at the moment.

    Hi Redback
I agree, changing these tyres on the side of the road would not be pleasant and not my preferred option.

You would need 265/60-18 to have the same diameter so not quite the standard 255/60-18 size but perhaps near enough in an emergency.
