Radio control rocker switch working?
Do you have the radio volume up and down rocker switch on your steering wheel and if so, how well is it working?
It occurs to me that if the radio volume button is not working well, then perhaps just pull the air bag off and try to reconnect up anything you can find in under - a thought anyway. I realize the cruise buttons are on the other side if the steering wheel, so a fault in the connector on one side does not necessarily mean the other side is sick, but I expect the clock spring is common to both.
The link below is to the radio control button concern.

steering wheel removal video
Below is a the minute YouTube video as to how to remove the steering wheel on a 3. It is pretty good.
Myself, I remove the negative battery cable rather than the positive, about the only quibble I had on the whole video.
The video shows you how to remove the airbag, the trickiest part of the whole removal process. The steering wheel being removed is I figure close to the one you have - no radio buttons, just the horn buttons; also no cruise, but you have that.

How to replace a steering wheel clock spring
Finally committed to changing out the slip ribbon assembly (clock-spring rotary assembly)
Bought one on eBay from UK for about $100 all up
Being aware of the hazards of working on the airbag I disconnected the battery and shorted the battery cables for 2 minutes.
With the steering centred, straight ahead, the airbag assembly was released with a piece of fence wire about 100mm long a with a 5mm hook on one end. I positioned my self the the side, out of line of fire when working on the bag assembly
The rest is pretty straight forward. Carefully remove the connectors, note cable routing, release the steering wheel bolt and remove the wheel noting the witness marks on the spline.
The 2 torx screw underneath, holding the lower cowling were removed and the cowlings (top and bottom) eased away to access removal of the 4 phillips screws holding the rotary assembly.
Remove the remaining connectors and remove the rotary assembly
Replacement is generally the reverse of the above, but consider the following.
The new unit has a ring pull to keep the unit calibrated to straight ahead and requires snapping off, just before the steering wheel goes back on
Check witness marks on steering wheel/spline are aligned and the spigot engages the hole in the wheel. Torque steering wheel bolt to 63 NM
Double check connectors and cable routing and retention. All the connectors are uniquely mated so you cant mix them up
The airbag assembly is pushed on and will snap into place. Take care not to pinch any cables.
Reconnect battery.
Tested the function of the switches. All functions now work including cruise control and radio controls that had previously become unreliable
