    Cruise Control stopped working

I have had the cruise Control go from working fine to Intermittent for a while and now not working at any time

when it was working intermittently it would usually work fine after a restart of the car.

Is this possibly connections on the Steering column or the Cruise computer?

Are there any ideas on how to determine the failed component?

    Much appreciate any input here..

The HDC did the same thing but has now miraculously repaired permanently = win Some Loose some ..

Make sure Terrain response is turned off, Cruise control won't work if any other setting than normal is set.
Otherwise yes the clock spring in the steering column may be the culprit.

It can also be caused by a faulty brake light switch.

Was it coming up "cruise not available" each time ?

    Mine did the same.

I ended up doing a full reboot, and it has been fine since.

Hope its as easy as that for you.

    Thanks For quick replies

The System in not in a TR setting but set for road..

Brake lights all good and all lighting in general recently tested and 100%.

A full reboot can be done (please Confirm) by disconnecting the battery and leaving for half an hour then reconnecting.

If this is going to rectify the error it may be worth trying. Am at risk of causing other issues (like loosing all other manually configured seat and mirror settings and key fob additional settings and so on ??

If so I may leave that for another time as its not a biggie not to have cruise control.

I just find it maximises MPG on flat road highway travel and can assist in not creeping the speed over the limit (as the car is so quiet and cosseted that you loose track of what's happening outside of the zone).

110km/hr in an open sports car is a very different experience to being inside the disco at the same speed.

back to the item about the clock spring mentioned ? is that something that requires replacement or (following a youtube Steering wheel removal procedure) could just be adrift?

    Thanks again for all responses

I don't know what other settings will be wiped when a full reboot is done apart from windows and clock. I have SE so don't have memory seats. You need to reprogramme the one touch windows again....2 minute job. Clock time and date needs to be entered.

Pop bonnet, and remove lid to battery. Activate handbrake and close doors. When handbrake light goes off, car has gone to sleep.....mostly.
Remove battery terminals negative first then positive. Use a spanner to touch both cables together.....ensuring that the cables are not touching the battery.
    No time needed to reconnect.
    Positive, then negative.
    Reboot complete.

Could be steering wheel switches also, easy to R&R if you have someone local may be easy to swap out each other's & test.

    switch symptoms?

    Looking at it as symptoms

When it works / worked - the first press of either the + switch - or the ON switch in the past would activate and set the current speed.

+ or - would then raise or lower the speed marginally while the ON / Off would do the respective action.

It is my assumption that if it was a switch, it would most likely still work with one or the other - for both the switches to fail at the same time would be unlikely - and for both to be intermittent (when that was the case) may also be unlikely?

I may be dead wrong with this as I know nothing of what I am looking at here .. just a hunch I suppose.

You may have the knowledge of the sequence of activation and the ON OFF switch if failed altogether may not let the signal through to the + and Minus switch ? so it may be the case?

I guess it may need more technical help - the blokes at British offroad usually nail it pretty quick .. so perhaps it may be after a book in with them.

but I will see if the reboot may do the job this weekend.

Thanks one and all for your input much appreciated.

I had the same problem in a D3 V8....intermittent to start and then became a permanent issue. Tried all sorts of things thinking it was a system issue or a fault connection somewhere. Turned out to be the Clock Spring in the steering wheel. (Just a big ribbon cable wrapped around a few times!)
Dealer charged over $700 to replace...you could do it yourself and buy one online for less than $300. You need to remove the steering wheel air bag which needs a special LR tool.....I found a coat hanger just as effective!
