I upgraded my stereo in the RRS about 12 months ago. I lost the factory nav., steering wheel controls and 4x4 info, don't really miss it. I also kept the old unit so I can return the car to stock for the next buyer (not that I'm planning on getting rid of it for quite some time!).
I also did the speakers, added an amp and under-seat sub-woofer. Cost a lot but the quality (and volume) is awesome. Just recently added a 12" woofer in the boot too, which rattles the mirrors nicely :D

Got two subs under my seats.
BTW you can get an adaptor for the steering wheel controls. Mine is IR (sender in front light cluster) but depending on what the HU needs you can get hard wired adaptors.

Dunno about the amp but the RRS does have a sub woofer in the rear tailgate as standard - I assume there is an amp there somewhere but dunno where it is.

No sub in my tailgate, I've seen the hole where one would fit but that'd surely rattle the number plate to bits!! Can't rememer the exact calculations, but one 12" sub needs approx 1 cubic foot of air (in a sealed box) to perform at its best. Not sure JLR worked that through at the factory...
My woofer sits in its own box in the boot, secured with a strap to the baby seat mounts. It's got quick release wiring so I can remove it easily for camping or Bunnings trips :)
Both amps and the mini woofer (with in-built amp) fit perfectly under the back seat, which still folds flat :)
Not bothered about steering wheel controls, if I really can't be bothered reaching 6 inches from the wheel to the volume knob, I'll use the remote control :)

Strange - my RRS is a bog standard base model RRS with no options and it has the sub in the tailgate - only found it a couple of weeks back when I had the tailgate lining off. Looking at the car built sheet on Topix there is no mention of a sub in the options so I assumed it was standard. It does not shake and vibrate the rear as I did not even know it was there despite having the car for near 3 years.

As far as the steering wheel controls are concerned the main issue is not being able to change settings in the command centre which uses steering wheel controls and the radio as an interface.

My D3's base stereo is missing 3 buttons and the cd has given up the ghost, I have and aux connection, so not a big problem.
Have been considering upgrading, have an Alpine amp in the shed and could get carried away, I like my music.
Couple of questions
What fascias have everyone been using, is it off ebay? What's in the kit? How much?
Do you think the after market stereos, 4 x 50w have suitable grunt, given this is usually peak power, not RMS.
Or do I upgrade the car, now that would be nice.

Is it connected? Mine definitely only has a hole.
A little off-topic so apologies to the o.p., but what sort of stuff do your steering wheel buttons do? I think mine only do cruise control (still works) / HDC speed control, volume and "ff/rwd" (redundant now). Other stuff like trip computer, fuel range etc is on the end of the indicator stalk....

You could order the fascia from any car audio shop, prices from $80 to 120 from memory. I think the best thing to do is get professional installation, for a couple of hundred bucks extra i believe it is worthwhile for the risk to the car, or even just the stereo. You don't want to lose any car functionality.

Sub in tailgate only does <25htz so does not move a lot of air.
Woofers in doors have to do bass from 25htz up so they work hard.
Some have left the OEM HU behind a panel in the vehicle so the functions still work.

Oh and i forgot to mention, that if your asking installers for quotes, i got a huge range of different feedback, including that the land rover required special equipment installed because of the internal wiring (fibre optics). Even though they all inspected the same car. For my car none of that was required. This is because I didn't have the high end standard stereo equipment in the first place (probably for the HSE I imagine?). But the cost was a lot more for that, though i cant remember how much. Anyhow the advice was wrong! Luckily i kept trying until i found someone i trusted ( a specialist car audio place, not a JB Hi Fi or even Autobahn - they were wrong!)
