    D3 Car Stereo - replaced

I've put a new Clarion unit in, and pulled out the original unit. I loved the old unit but lack of Bluetooth functionality was unacceptable! I do love the old school styling of that original unit, and have carefully put it aside. I was wondering if I should keep it just in case I ever sell the car? Thoughts?

You must have the base model radio - doesn't happen with higher spec radios and retain full functionality of the car systems - some do not support steering controls, loose dash clock, problems with speaker interface and loose the ability to change settings in the command center display.

I am glad it has works out for you.

I would be interested in what model you fitted, as I also assumed you loose a lot of the functions as well.

Ok, the unit I had installed was a VX603. It's a nice looking unit. I wanted a volume knob, not buttons. It's simple to use, but my requirements were also pretty basic. Bluetooth for phone and music. Works perfectly. Otherwise I pretty much listen to am radio (ABC?.. Nerd)! I also installed a cradle for my iPhone, so it charges in the car and if I want to make a call I simply ask Siri to "call the wife" or "call home". I didn't bother with the gps maps, as I like to use my phone for that. It works really well in the cradle. You can buy an upgrade card for the clarion that would give me maps with the push of a button though, if I wanted. The unit does a bunch of other things, but it don't use them really. I don't dial from the unit, though you can, because Siri is much easier.

As for losing car functionality, I researched this prior to installation. It was professionally installed by Audio Express in Redcliffe (Brisbane), the only thing I lost was the clock on the dash. My phone now does that, and the stereo also displays time. Fitting the phone cradle was a little tricky, as I didn't want to drill into the dash, so it sits on my rhs, directly above the ac vent. It's pretty well located, out of the way, but easy to reach.

As for the original stereo unit, I am pretty sure it is the base model. It was great, and I had an after market Bluetooth unit that came with the car (car was bought second hand), but it didn't support Bluetooth music, only phone calls.

Overall I am pretty happy with the change!

Hi , is there much improvement in the audio quality? This unit should have more power than the original. Also what cost for the install and unit?
    Thanks

Ok then, I think the whole lot cost around $1200, not sure exactly. That includes fitting, plus the handsfree cradle though. The clarion unit was about 700, and a fascia was also required. There may have been some other parts too. Sorry I don't know how to add photos from ipad. I took some, but haven't got computer with me.

I think there was some improvement. The sound seems sharper, crisper. You can spend a great deal of money on extra equipment, but for me, this is excellent!

I've just put my old Alpine unit in to replace the base unit CD400 and it's a great improvement. I'm keeping the old unit to slot back in when it comes to move the car on.

The base stereo is crap really so anything would be better. But to get decent sound it needs new speakers and a sub.

I have just replaced my base unit with Alpine IVE -W535ABT and reversing camera. Very happy with the unit. I have my old iphone connected in console bin, filled with music and audio books for kids.

My current iphone connects via bluetooth and can stream music from that as well.

The only complaint is the horrible interface to navigate any externally connected devices. Hopefully Alpine will get their act together and sort it out and release a firmware update.
