    D4 Lemon???

    Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum, however have been reading posts for years.
Ive just traded the 2005 4.4 v8 sport on a 2010 3.0 d4 SE. Before the sport I had a v8 classic RR. Ive come over to the dark side, never had a diesel
Before I test drove the car the dealer told me that they were replacing the rear diff and when I drove it I could see why, not a nice noise!
I took it to my mechanic and he plugged it in and gave me a report of all the codes it produced. Gave this to the dealer and they are replacing the instrument cluster module.
The other items were brake discs need skimming, front control arm bushes worn(not bad).
Anyway I'm picking it up today, my question to anyone who is interested is am I buying a lemon?
Should a 3yr old car need a new rear diff and a instrument cluster module?
Is the diff going to fail again in another 65000km?
Apart from this it is a nice car, does not look like it has been off road.
As for now driving an oil burner, I think I have been converted.
Look forward to hearing your opinions.

Did you look at the history of the car??

I would imagine it's too late now that your picking it up, although it getting a new instrument cluster modal seems a bit sus, I don't understand that, control arm bushes and brakes are normal for those Ks.

I would see if the car has an E-Diff and if so make sure they replace it with an E-Diff.

Is this a LR Dealer car or car yard sale.

    Baz.
    Cheers Baz.

    Hi Redback
    Regular service history
    Buying from a LR Dealer.
    No E-Diff

The mechanic I took it to is a LR specialist, said the diff problems are becoming more frequent.

The sport I have needs a new SRS module so It does not surprise me about the instrument cluster module.

    No money handed over yet!

I had to replace my instrument cluster model in my 2005 TVD6 S at about 130k. it was triggering a fault that put the car into some kind of pre-crash mode where the doors would unlock and the hazards come on while I was driving, it also wouldn't start again while it was in that mode. LR dealer could not diagnose after 4 visits so ended up taking to Graeme Cooper who managed to diagnose and fix.

I'm surprised to hear the comment about diff problems becoming more frequent, I'm pretty sure you'd be hard pressed finding a failure on here, I certainly haven't heard of one, the Puma Defender yes, lot's of threads on here about the Late model Defender diffs failing.

Hope it all goes well for you, I'm assuming the history was good and no regular visits in between services, you obviously have your doubts about the car, maybe you should walk away, it can be a hard decision though.

Just to add to the data bank.

My second hand D3 2008, at 4 yrs old and 80k km. needed a replacement E diff for the rear and a replacement centre diff, both very noisy.

The centre diff surprised Ward at Graeme Coopers, he thought it was very rare.
    Rear diff? Not so surprised.

Car had been used as mums schools bus mostly!

12k km later not an issue of any kind except 2 punctures to the Coopers that were on the car. Never had one with two previous sets of Pirellis on the D2, Won't be buying Coopers for replacement tyres when needed.

    Cheers

Well I took the plunge and got the D4.
I went for a test drive and it drove like a new car.
The LR dealer replaced the rear diff, new front discs and pads(I thought they would have just skimmed them) and the module.
They said they don't know what the problem was with the diff, although probably a bearing.
Very happy with the dealer and there service.
Now it's time to get out and use it!!!

    Hope it all goes well.
There have been a few diffs changed(mainly D3),some are on the UK sites, but not that many as others have said. Some may have been very high mileage as well, and who knows how well they have been serviced.?

Instrument cluster was changed on mine early on,something to do with "smart key not found" message that kept appearing.

Mine has not missed a beat, been fantastic, just that one issue.

As you would have noticed from this site, these vehicles are pretty reliable, particularly the D4 which had some improvements over the D3.

You just won't believe how well they drive,on and off road.

Oh,the discs, they have to be no less than a certain thickness,so often better to replace them.Depending on driving style of the last owner, how long they last.

There is one issue you will have, you won't be able to get out of the drivers seat.....
