Is the fuel gauge faulty or is it just the distance to empty that is varying?

SupporterThe fuel gauge reading on my HSE has started to jump around
and is giving me ? unreliable readings
ie ....when i turn the car on it may say Distance to empty 140 km \
next time i turn it on it can drop to 5 Km ....and the time after that it can jump back up to 60 km ......then back down to 2 km
could this be software related or a faulty sensor in the tank........is their antthing i can do or is it back to the dealers for a fix

I had this in the D3. Was the sender in the tank which is not a small job to fix.

We had it happen on a trip around Vic and home via Parkes Orange. We were about 30k's from Orange and all of a sudden gauge read full. We have aux tank which I thought had somehow siphoned through( I did not know how it worked but after this I did). We had a dual axle trailer behind with 15kva gen on. The father in law in front in his '07 Rangie V8 diesel in front with car trailer which had series one on board. So we decided to tow to safer ground which was about 30k's with the Rangie. So we got to Orange and fixed up the fuel problem which we won't go into my mistake there. We worked out later the Rangie was probably towing around 6-7 tonne inclusive of vehicle weight. Go the Rangie!

SupporterMine is all over the place, it will usually read empty (with all the messages that go with that) after it has been filled up then driven 70 to 80kms, it then comes back to saying it is 3/4 full after driving 450ish kms, and seems to be ok during the last 1/4.
It's a long way to the dealers so I'm waiting until it's next service to try and get it to do it then, it will be the last service before the warranty runs out so I will be looking for something in writing as to the cause if they fob me off.
When I was last travelling overseas I thought I could get it fixed in Perth, but the dealer up there is very unhelpfull (to be kind) They don't seem at all interested in the marque let alone the clients, Ferrari's are far more exciting I think?

						My D4 did exactly same.
Turned out to be the sender in the tank.
Unfortunatly a tank out repair so hopefully warranty still applies
Same thing on my D4. One of the two senders in the tank was suffering an intermitent fault, and both were replaced. Tank had to be removed to do it.
