On our the way back from the in laws after Christmas with the wife, 3 year old son and 3 month old son we hit a large male roo on the Wollombi road not far out of Broke.
The roo stepped of the side of the road and straight in front of the car going just under 80K's hitting it just off centre on the passengers side.
We have a genuine LR steel bar the covers the font bump and grill so I thought we should be fine. Maybe a little bend here and there on the bull bar or a broken light.
Hit the anchors and then the roo immediately the airbags went off and the cabin filled with smoke. In the split second after the hit my wife thought the airbag was the roo and was terrified it had made it into the cabin. Passenger side airbag hit the windscreen and smashing it.
We rolled to a halt off the road and checked on the kids all a little shaken but fine.
Now expecting as the airbags had gone off the front of the car must be destroyed. I went and had a look only to be surprised of the little visible damage.
Still 2 hours from Sydney and now 9:00PM we thought of how to get home.
I checked the radiator and under the bonnet with no signs of damage I turned the ignition back on and she fired up no warning lights (except airbags) no smoke or steam. Moved forward a couple of metres and
all seemed fine steering etc..
I folded up the airbags and poked them bake in the steering wheel and dash then packed up the kids and wife to start the rest of our journey. After a few K's of careful driving all seemed fine made it home by 11.
The next day I contacted the insurance company and the car was towed to their assessment centre in Sydney.
I received a call yesterday with the news it will be 6 to 8 weeks for repair and the bill is estimated to come to $13,000.
If only the airbags had not gone off

						Items I've found
New dash
2 new airbags
New seatbelts
2 seatbelt buckles
Bumper
Bumper iron
Bull bar
Fog light
Windscreen
I have looked at the online UK parts retailers and some are surprisingly expensive
Glad to hear you and the family are all well,
Under the circumstances I would be wrapped, you guys are safe, the car made it home and hit up the insurgence for a hire car.
You want it back in the same condition so don't worry about it,
Cheers Ean

LR bar made no difference then?
Where is it being repaired, hope not scientific smash?
We hit deer over here usually with pickups and no front protection. Other than a bashed up grill and no headlight and a bent fender, the interior remains OK and the vehicle is still driveable - not all the time but most of the time. The deer is no longer a problem I might add.
Hitting a moose or cow is not so good; a moose will tip up on the bonnet and slide thru the windscreen, not the best for the occupants - the cow, well the pickup probably has to be towed.
I guess a kangaroo can be bigger than a deer but they look to be bottom heavy and I would think tend to go under the vehicle?
Somehow the damage with the LR genuine bar sounds to be more than if one of the ARB style that sticks out had been in place?
