HSE head unit can't be ditched - it is tied to the canbus. (Or was it MOSTbus?) Whatever the case, you can't remove it.

Bugger..did not register the HSE in forum header..yes..HSE uses an optic feed to amp and then distributes to speakers, or so my stereo fitter told me.

It can be done, but new speaker wire needs to be run in behind the dash...and the fitter said he will never do another HSE...and after the debarcle with my reverse camera..he says he will never do another Discovery 3/4!

Thanks all for your helpful comments. I am wondering (a) whether the problem has anything to do with the fact that the factory option (or is it standard on a HSE?) DVD player plays through the aux setting on the head unit? or (b) does the fact that the DVD audio through AUX works fine help suggest where my problem is?

Brumby - this is the first mention of you having a DVD player...

That was an option (probably Rosen brand), and yes - the install of it "stole" the aux input from your stereo.

Sorry about that I only discovered all this today. I thought the DVD player only played through the headsets. Our kids are all growed up so the DVD player has not been used in the 2 months we have had the car. The DVD set up is Alpine.

Just to weigh in on this a little late, I thought the AUX input on the rear of the cubby box had a switch in it that disabled the other AUX inputs when something was plugged into it.

I'm sure I've seen that on the wiring diagram somewhere.

Brumby - it is probably worth the 5 minutes of your time, to pull out the head unit and see if they connected the Aline DVD to the aux in at the back. Grab the two sides of the H trim just up a little from the bottom and give them a good yank. After it pops out (and be aware some spring clips may go flying!), you will see some screws to undo the head unit - then slide it out and check the connections. With any luck they've pulled the original aux red/blue/black cables out and you can just pull the Alpine connected ones out and put them back in. Kids can still use the infrared headphones for the Alpine and you get your aux input back again.

If you're a bit apprehensive about the trim removal - maybe take it to a stereo shop and have them do it.

There is an aux input in the passenger side footwell as well as the rear of the console. The console socket is switched as well and must have a plug in it to activate the aux circuit.
There is also a phone in circuit on the back of the head unit itself for phone audion ( not that that is part of your problem)
The DVD wiring is a mystery as my SE does not have one but Topix should have the wiring diagrams for the aux inputs.
I would consider a bluetooth kit such as a Parrot MKI9X00 which will provide you with a streaming input from the phone and a bluetooth hands free as well, much better than aux plugs once it's set up.
