Thread: Remote key

Just yesterday I picked up my (new to me) D3, and had the same issue. Like yours, it only came with one key. ULR claim ~$300 for a new one, which, for some strange reason, I didn't think was too expensive. Maybe, after just forking out so much for a used car, my idea of "too expensive" has become a little skewed...
Anyway, interested to follow if anyone else has a solution...

I guess $300 if it is cut and programmed is bearable. eBay has generic pads for $20. Bargainkeys on eBay has complete key that needs programming and cutting for about $55 plus shipping from UK.
I might try one from Bargainkeys and see how it goes. Unless anyone knows a good local source?

Found myself in the same situation last year when we bought our D3.

Purchased a genuine LR key from Britcar here: CWE500041SW | KEY+FOB UNIT 433MZ -NAS -J DIS111-RRS | Land Rover | | Britcar (UK) Ltd

I contacted them via email and they organised for it to be pre-cut for our D3. All I had to do then was get it programmed by our non-dealer service agent.

Currency exchange rates were more favourable then, but might still be worth looking at?

The Brit Car option is a viable alternative to the dealer assuming you have someone that has actually previously programmed a D3 key.

I say previously, as most who think they know how fail and that generally wrecks the internals of your key. The programmer only gets one chance to do it.

It almost make sense that a LR key is near impossible to clone - even the back street boys do not know how. It seems the BMW design people were not engaged to engineer the key software - must have been a team of boffins.

As such, the only thing that you might find off eBay is an empty key case into which the internals of your key could be installed and the metal key bit transferred.

The first jpg below is my key and shows a set of numbers related to the radio frequency we use here. Australia uses a different frequency so if ordering from far away, you may wish to quote your frequency numbers.

Also LR has two different key blanks. As to which you use, I do not know, but if you just transfer the existing cut key to the new case, all will be fine.

I think here in AUS we use the same 433MHz as the UK.
anyway this UK supplier has them. but I'm concerned about programming. My VW GOLF has a trick where you put the copy in the door and the original in the ignition or something like that.
more research i guess.

AU & BA Fords were like that , they had a system to program the key with radio and ignition ,Easy one you had done it a few times

Special equipment is required to program the keys. The key I sourced from Britcar was programmed at Land Rover specialists M.R. Automotive where I also have my D3 serviced. I'm very happy with them, as are others:

I think I'll go the britcar Key (Austral just gave me numbers of over $700 LOL) - did they cut the key as well?
I will look up M.R. Automotive.


Edit: Called MR Auto - about $320 all done. Too easy, no hassle. So I ordered one. They will also re-case my old key for $109.
