    Brake controller issues

Drove my d4 tonight, first time with trailer on in the dark, so on come lights, then a couple of mind later smoke is bellowing from brakes of trailer. Has anyone had anything like this before?

Seems the brakes gave been on, I noticed the car labouring a bit more , but thought it was due to the extra weight I was carrying.

    Has anyone got any ideas?

The D4's trailer socket is wired as per euro connections with dual parking lamp cct, so the pin that is for electric brakes here is connected to the parking lights.

Do you have an electric brake controller fitted, if so did they cut the splice in the vehicle wiring?

More info to be found here.

    Hi Gribsmy13,
I wired my brake controller from the back of the vehicle at the trailer socket wiring, I used the ign live from the white socket. I never had any problems after that. Trying to wire up from anywhere else I had different issues. If you fit LED lights to your trailer you will need to fit a magic box from Linear to stop the indicators flashing all the time.

I haven't had any issues with lights, and didn't have any brake issues for the trip home from Sydney with the camper on, only last night, it's really odd

So the previous towing has been without the lights on? If so then the mentioned wire presumably is still intact.

I had a problem like that when I first had the controller fitted. The first sign of a problem was a complete set of error messages, from HDC, EAS, hand brake, ABS etc. that evening the brakes locked on, wearing a flat on the tyre of one wheel.

According to my Land Rover service mechanics, it is caused by the constant monitoring function of the D4 electronics feeding back into the controller. On my vehicle it has been solved by adding a diode into the brake signal wire, so that the controller can sense the stop light signal without feeding back artifact into the D4 electronics.

What had happened was the fog light wire was incorrectly wired into controller. Apparently 2012 and 2013 are wired differently
