Thread: GG AT noise. Comment/discussion

Hi Paul,

I've had GG AT2's on my 08 D3 for just over 90k km's and I haven't yet noticed any increase in noise despite the tyres getting close to replacement.

The tyres have done Fraser and numerous off road trips without missing a beat. They have been rotated (5 wheel), balanced and aligned every 10k km (ish!).

This longevity coupled with the fact that I haven't had a single puncture means that I'll definitely be pricing another set from tirerack.com.

My gg ats are about 2.5 years old and have done about 25,000km. They have been noisy and obnoxious since new and vibrating since about 15,000km. The noise was such that it masked a failing wheel bearing. I hate them ...

However, they grip well on road, wear well and are good (for me) off-road ....

Regret not buying Pirelli ATR and may dump these because of the noise and vibration well before they're worn out.

I had GG ATs on my D4 for a short time. Thought they were a good tyre on the dirt but couldn't handle the noise especially at 90 to 100kph.
Now have Pirelli Scorpion Zeros which though not as aggressive give an excellent ride and are extremely quiet. Much better than Wranglers. I do have the luxury of a second set BFG MT KM2 17s for off road which by the way are not as noisy as the GGs.

Had them on my D3 in both the AT and newer AT2. Problem with any A.T. is they compromise both for road and off road. I put MT on 17 inch rims for the fun dirty slow stuff. Unlike Discojools my Micky T MTs are very noisy on road!

I do see a little vibration recently on road. The roof rack is my noise generator, I do not find them overly loud myself even with the roof rack off. Only one side wall puncture in 200,000km probably due to my driving as much as the tire

They are a reasonable compromise I.M.O.

The particular tyres in question are the new version GG AT which was just appearing around 2 years ago.
I agree AT's are more 'aggressive' than standard road tyres but my BFG AT's were never as noisy at any time throughout their life and BFG MT's only got loud towards the end.
For me it's been the undoing of an otherwise very good to excellent tyre.
I could only recommend them to the hearing impaired (maybe I just need to wait a few more years!).

I also get the noise from the GG AT's.

It is only at 95 - 100 km/h on smooth bitumen roads on over run or coast.
Not when accelerating.
Not on course chip bitumen.

Sounds like something vibrating & coming from right front.

It is a pity because I have found them to be a great tyre otherwise.
Good on both wet & dry bitumen
Good on gravel & limestone roads.
Good on sand.
I have done 46,000 and still heaps left.

I have GG ATs with about 20k on them, they are slightly quieter than the GG AT2s which they replaced but I don't find either of them to be overly noisy, with the stereo off and the windows down you can hear a little but it's not intrusive. With the windows up and the radio on you can't hear a thing.

You will never find an AT worth having that is as quiet as a HT tyre. Overall I AMA. Fan of the GGs, great grip wet and dry on and off road, even not disastrous in a bit of mud, never had a puncture. My only complaint is that the new ATs have several surface cuts and divots which I never got with the AT2s despite similar usage. May be a coincidence but I think they may be a little softer in the sidewalls.
