    Roof rack noise

    Hi all,

I have taken my roof racks off the D3 for now, as I could not for the life of me get them in a position where they didn't whistle so loud it was unbearable!

I've had plenty of cars with roof racks, and this is the first one that is so incredibly noisy!

They are the Thule branded LR ones. Not winged in one specific direction, and I only have the short rails on the taller part of the roof.

And I did think maybe it was the snorkel deflecting the air onto the rack, but removing the front one the rear one then was whistling like crazy.

Any suggestions? It would be nice not to have to carry them around in the back, just in case I will need to use them.

    Thanks,
    Ben

This may or may not help. My wife had a set of Thule racks on her Freelander a while back, they whistled like mad, turns out they forgot to insert some very thin rubber liners in the rails which when installed stopped the noise. Maybe the same issue for you.

I had the same issue with Rhino Racks on my RRS. Once I fitted those little strips on the undersides it stopped so second Tony's suggestion. Stu.

I have the Rhino aero cross bars (on short roof tracks) on my D3 with rubber strips fitted and no whistling issues. David

    Thanks all,

General consensus seems to point to these rubber strips. I am pretty sure mine have these fitted, however I am often known to be wrong just ask my fiance.

Anyone have a pic with this piece fitted and not fitted so i know what it looks like?

    Cheers,
    Ben

X2, fitting rubber strips to the underside. I've put Rhino racks on my RRS and didn't put in the strips to the underside at first, there was quite noticeable whistling at speed. Now fitted, all good.

When I purchased the racks, some strips were missing in the boxes

Hi Ben, Note my reply, it was the bottom of the bars where the legs slide in or are fitted to a groove that allows adjustment that was missing a plastic strip. I have had the rubber strip on top from new. Stu
