Should the interior lights turn on when door open?

Seems like a dumb question, but when you buy used cars, you can never be sure whether this is an intentional feature, or whether something is broken...

How do I get the interior lights to turn on without having to press the button on the ceiling? (when I do press the button, the lights do come on, so it's not a fuse issue I guess.)

Even more annoying is that there does not appear to be a switch for the light in the rear cargo area so no idea how to get that to turn on.

Is my BCM stuffed? Other threads suggest interior lights are switched by the BCM.
I've got a 3 month used car warranty on this car, so do I need to add "replace BCM" to the list?

    Ta.

On the D4, you can hold the button down for several seconds and it should reset.

D3 may or may not be the same....

Middle button on D4 on front set of roof lights.......press and hold. My dash then shows auto lights on or off. If auto lights are on they will come on when you open the door and go off when you fire her up and turn back on when you turn her off. If auto lights are off, none of the above.

On rear cargo lights on the D4 there is a middle light at the rear which comes on when you open the rear door. There is also a side light each side that works on a rocker switch.

All is normal and they can be reset.

I think all is fine with your 3; it is just that the previous owner deactivated the interior lights.

Below are the instructions from the owners handbook for my LR3. From the above posts, it sounds like the D4's are still the same so your D3 should be also as below.

Enjoy your new 3; there will be lots to learn as there are alot of features within that are not found on lesser vehicles.

It is possible to deactivate automatic operation
of all of the courtesy lamps by pressing the
front centre switch. The message ’INTERIOR
LIGHTS OFF’ will flash in the Message Center*.

To switch the lamps off without disabling
automatic mode, briefly press the centre
    switch.

To enable automatic mode press the front
centre switch for more than three seconds.

The message ’INTERIOR LIGHTS AUTOMATIC’will flash in the message centre.

    Thanks all. Fixed.
A bit of an obscure way to do it I guess.
Any other "easter eggs" I should know about?

Check that the studs attached to the bodywork that the gas struts for the upper tailgate fix on to are not loose. That can apparently be a real pain in the neck to repair if the nut inside the bodywork becomes detached.

Does the driver's seat belt alarm sound if you drive without the belt fitted? It can be silenced.
