The E diff is worth every dollar, had two discos first one didn't have it 2nd one has and its the best option they offer for the money by far! the extra 6 speakers over the std 11 supplied won't get you up that step, wet muddy trackā¦.
Hi All,
Well after about three years (two as a member) fossicking through this great forum and dreaming of the day, I am finally biting the bullet and am in the final process of fine tuning a novated lease on a D4. I have learnt a great deal about this vehicle, which on occasions has worried me; but the knowledge and experiences over time of overcoming and understanding various little bugs (the double contact brake light switch fault is one that comes to mind) this forum has given me the confidence to become a proud owner of the prestigious Discovery 4. I haven't even driven one yet! That will come tomorrow I hope and I'm sure I'll be super impressed.
What I am looking at is a 2013/2014 Discovery D4 HSE, in only Nara Bronze (or Havana), optioned with Electronic Rear Differential and Surround Camera System or Vision Assist Pack. I would sacrifice the e-diff (undecided) if other options sweetened the deal and fit within my budget; Upgrade to Premium Sound system (825W 17 speaker) & to satisfy the other half & youngen, the Rear Seat Entertainment (a rip off at $4,100 as an option IMHO) I'd rather go aftermarket for half the price.
What I would like to know as I can't seem to decide from threads read about it is this; Is the E-diff really worth the wait for a 'build' vehicle? I have been patient and can still be. It was mentioned in other threads that the TR system was improved in the MY13 model to the point that it might not be as necessary. Obviously lose the Off Road screen info, which I think is nice but somewhat gimmicky. I don't see myself taking the muddiest bog hole route and treating her like a busted ass Tojo, but would like to know that if it is a great help (like air lockers) then I do have it fitted for when called upon. Sort of answering this myself. All other accessories will come in the years to follow so I don't pay LCT on them (Side bars first (for car parks),Bull bar/Winch, GOE 18's, dual battery, roof rack) Thoughts anyone? Sorry about the long spiel.

I had a similar dilemma - would have loved the E-Diff for the added off road ability but I thought to myself will I ever really need it? SWMBO is not well and we will not be going down any real rough stuff so in my case, I realized I could do without. Resale wasn't an issue as I keep cars for 10 years plus. Bought mine November last year when they had the runout sale with factory cash bonus on offer. Bought an HSE so it's got a load of goodies. Took one in stock and had it in two weeks as the dealer had to get it from interstate. The other thing was my old car was sucking money like a wormhole so I was keen to get rid of it.
Bottom line IMHO is if you're happy to wait then why not? But for me the stars aligned so to speak. The car was available, I got a great deal, I got rid of my old clunker and for me E-Diff was a nice to have rather than a must have. From what I've read E-diff does make a magnificent 4wd into an awesome 4wd and the price is peanuts really. Why LR don't fit them as standard is beyond me though.
If your considering fitting these then I'd imagine you would want to take it where they are needed. If that is really the case then get the E-diff. If not then forget the GOE rims, winch etc as well since you're probably not going to need them either.
As accessories go, the E-diff is sensational value at ~$1000, still brings a smile to my face after ~3 years of ownership.

Hi Mungus,
The extra $1,050.00 that I paid for the e-diff when I purchased my $90K + Disco 4 was a no brainer as (so I believe) you cant add it later.
I sold the Disco at the beginning of last year. Had 3 calls in the first 3 days and the first caller was the one that bought it.
One thing that was important to him was the e-diff.
I believe that for re-sale.....its a must.
Cheers, Craig
I reckon its down to what you think your going to do with your vehicle. Personally I did not opt to wait for 6 months (at the time) for a vehicle build and was able to get almost everything I wanted in a vehicle from floor stock.
Like 'Letherm' its an individual call based on you projected needs.
Resale may or may not be a decision point but in my experience it matters little as I usually hold on to my vehicles. I still have my D2 10 years on.
I purchased a HSE off the floor in 2011 and have now travelled 85,000k with it and I am more than happy with the vehicle and its ability to do everything that I am likely to want of it! Mind you, had a similar vehicle with an e-diff been available I probably would have taken it!
I bought an MY12 SE with 14,000 k's on the clock. I do regret not having eDiff and high end sound.
In hindsight, I should have been more patient and waited, but once I got the "approval" and my circumstances were right, I grabbed what I could. I still love the vehicle but wish I had those extra goodies. Next vehicle will definitely have them.
If you ring around the dealers, they will know what's on the way and whether it has eDiff or not.

The three things I've really felt was worth the money:
1) e-diff (but I do take it off-road)
2) Vision Pack (Surround cameras have been invaluable, and I like the adaptive xenons)
3) Keyless entry
I decided against an upgraded sound system as the one in the HSE is more than good enough in a vehicle, as there is road and traffic noise; if I want great sound, I'd listen at home with my dedicated setup.
Thanks for the replies. Really appreciated! Decided e-diff is a definite. Also looking at changing from the surround camera system to the Vision Pack, as you get the cameras and also the adaptive headlights and high beam assist for an additional $600 outlay. Any comments on these?
Missed the last build apparently, so will be looking at around late July for delivery if I get onto it. Didn't drive one today, maybe tomorrow (work dependant), but it will be a TDV6. At least I'll get the handling/comfort feel from it. Now I need to get names of interstate dealers to price up. WA is first port of call as they do seem to be the cheapest online deals, then the other states. I'm a drummer so I do live for music, but I don't seem to turn my stereo up too loud in the VE and it's the ****ty stock system, so I think the 11 speaker 380W will do just fine. It's Meridian now I believe. Don't know much about them or HK but the impression I get is the 11spk, 380W is fairly decent. Is it actually 11 separate speakers or do they consider a two way as two and three way as three?
Once all the seats are laid flat, there is a huge amount of room for carrying that Drum kit around!
