    How to wire winch

I've just bought a second hand bullbar and winch for my D3.

Thanks TRS, good doing business with you!

Now the winch is already wired up and only needs the big red and black wires connected to the car.

I know the red one goes onto the positive of the starter battery and all the powers that be say the black goes onto the negative of the battery.

BUT, I'm a student of the 'Drivesafe' school and I'm sure he says NOTHING should be bolted to the negative terminal of the starter battery as that is where the charging system gets all its electrickery info from.

So, should I shorten the winch earth lead and bolt it to one of the bullbar mounting bolts?

    Regards

Black goes to a big earth stud on the body next to the battery. This is recommended by many of the experts, not just Drivesafe.

Correct! Always earth to earth studs on the D3/D4 (and several other new vehicles with intelligent charging systems)

    As above.

You want the earth stud as close to the battery as you can, but NOT on the battery itself.

The cars monitor the battery condition, and because they are smarter than most of us, dont like this to be messed with.

Now, when you add your driving lights, same process. Positive to battery, negative to earth stud on the body.

The earth studs at the front of the battery box are quite small. Is there a larger one somewhere I don't know about.

Thats why I suggested the bullbar mounting bolt.

Yep, definately a bigger earth stud a bit further back.

This topic might help as I asked pretty much your question 18 month ago and asked questions and documented what needed to be done as I did it

just remember you are not limited to just the positive terminal on the battery you can also use the starter feed in terminal on the starter and the jump start post if fitted.

If you go into Topix and look through the accessory lists there are instruction / installation manuals including one for the LR winch which has wiring instructions.

It's VPLAP0130. Now if only I could attach it on iPad #%$@?!
