    Awning without a roof rack.

    Hi guys,

Curious to know if anyone has mounted an awning directly to the existing threaded holes on the roof of a Discovery without the use of a roof rack or rails.

I'm considering fashioning a mount IOT do this as an interim whilst waiting for my roof racks. I understand that the bolt holes on the vehicle are designed for downward force as opposed to lateral, but I figured that the awnings are so light I could get away with it.

    Thoughts, experiences?

I have done it on another vehicle. If you want adequate strength, run a lengthwise brace between the roofmount points, and don't mount the awning too far away from the mount points. It doesn't matter if the awning is actually above the roofline, rather than down the side, as long as it opens clearly.

You will probably have to vary the length of the mounts to the awning from the roofbolts, as the Disco roofrail channel angles in towards the front.

    Thanks,

If I do give it a go, I'll be sure to give it a write up. Might help someone out later on.
