    wheel stud replacement

Has anyone replaced the wheel studs in their D3/4. Was it a big job or high level of difficulty getting to the studs etc?

Just thinking of using longer studs.

The answer for the front wheels is No unless you are able to get under the vehicle do some grinding. Having replaced a front wheel bearing I decided to retrive the studs from the wheel flange in case I might need them one day. They punched out ok but I could not get passed the cast bearing housing, without first grinding a space to allow the stud be removed from the flange. I imagine the rear would be similar. I did this with the housing in the vice. Doing it on the vehicle would be very difficult I think.

Why do you want longer studs? I initially thought longer studs were needed to accomodate BMW X5 rims but found nuts with extended shanks that fit inside the stud holes that provide the necessary thread count.

I was thinking of having longer studs for my BB6 rims, I have just replaced the drums on my caravan and the suspension manufacturer is now using 14x1.5 studs that are 2mm longer which would on the Disco get three extra turns on the wheel nut.

Didn't BBS change the rim maching to allow more turns? It might be worth getting in touch with them as 14mm wheel studs require 9.3 turns for 1.5mm pitch to be legal as the nut's thread engagement length must be no less than the stud diameter.
