Thread: Which model D4 to buy?

For what's its worth in my humble opinion, an HSE is very good value compared to a specked up base model, even more so when comparing the SE to an HSE. Plus while you can always haggle the price of any Disco down, from my observations ver time you can usually haggle a HSE down even further than a base model D4.

I've got a new HSE D4 8spd sadly I just test drove the HSE and that's all so I don't really know between the SD and the TD, but yes I'll agree the HSE is a awesome model and if you bargain hard you can get a great deal almost the same as an SE with a few options. In the end I can guarantee you'll be over the moon with any D4 model you get haha they are an awesome car can not beat them!!

Another question...how important is the e-diff? I'm not really that into off-roading but would like to be able to do some beach driving, maybe some Vic high country (in summer!) stuff like Wonangatta, Dargo etc. Assume the standard vehicle will be more than capable? Reason being I will need to order and wait for an e-diff vehicle and really need one sooner than that.

An e-diff is not a must have option for off roading even in most of the harshest terrains that the majority of punters like to occassioally play in, so I wouldn't stress about that.
However they are a relatively cheap and very good option that does enhance any model Disco off road if you really like to do the hard stuff (which most people never will) and as well as that they are a very good selling point when it comes time to move your Disco on into the second hand market where your more likely to find a potential buyer wanting to build up a late model Disco for serious off road usage.

I agree with the previous comments about the HSE being a good choice if you're going to option up an SE. I was in the same position - wanted a few extras on an SE. By the time they were added an HSE became an obvious choice instead and it came with a few "nice to have" extras. I also got a good deal and ended up paying way less than I thought I would for the HSE. Bought mine November last year during a factory offer period - cash off.

As for the E Diff. Would I have liked to have it fitted, obviously, as it's good value. Did I really need it, no, because I know I won't be doing heavy 4WD trips. So it became a nice to have rather than a must have. From what I've read and heard the latest D4's are very good without the E Diff compared to earlier ones that really needed an E Diff if you wanted to do other than everyday 4WDriving. I also was able to buy one straight away without the long wait. It was transferred from Victoria to Sydney where I live. Even that took a couple of weeks as they wait for a full load before transport.

It does seem about right if you bargain hard you can get a HSE for around the $93k mark so I'm sure thats about the same as an SE with a few options plus you get a few nice extras you cant get in the SE such as memory settings and the interior lights in all the door handles and a few others.

I was chasing a car with an ediff for resale and the reasons stated most people buying second hand really want the ediff, but they are that awesome off road that they are not needed unless its severe, but if i remember correctly they come with a bigger stronger diff not that anyone has had any problems with the normal one. I didn't want to wait to order one either just found one that had it luckily!!

I was so lucky that I walked into the showroom and the SE sitting there ticked every box for me so I bought it on the spot. Now after 2 1/2 years and 74000km I am still overjoyed with it.
It is a matter of being persistent or lucky that one has your name on it.

Had a 2009 TDV6 2.7 did Cape York and Tassie and every where in between, awesome car! Traded last year on a 2013 8 speed TDV6 fitted with E diff, awesome car just got even better! For around $1100 they are the best option you can fit if you intend to do lots of off-road. I climb up wet muddy slopes that much easier and proved it on a few club days. HSE fitted with Ediff, dosnt get any better!
