Got my D4 back last week- all working fine with new rotary dial module. No explanation for module failure.
I have not tried holding the "+" Paddle up with ignition on but from a Google search I found details on how to do it and wrote a quick summary for future reference which may be helpful for others:
Re D4 rotary gear selector: selecting service mode with dial down
Turn on ignition (foot off brake initially)
Put foot on brake and hold “+” paddle up for >10 seconds
Button should come up so can place into “N”
    Regards, David

Glad you got it fixed David, nice set up you have there.

Thanks for the research, seems the foot on brake was the missing step.

    Cheers!

I purchased a Run-Out model MY 13 and noticed when I looked up it's VIN on TOPIx that it has an outstanding SB for a gear selector issue.

So it appears like there are known issues.
