Thread: 19' Pirelli ATR's In the Flinders ?

Just returned from 9000km trip through Central Australia on 18" Pirelli ATR's. We didn't quite make the Flinders but the roads around Mt Dare were atrocious with rocks. No punctures and they performed great. Also had them at Fraser Island earlier in the year.

As long as I get some decent mileage out of them, I'll certainly be buying them again.

I would stick with Coopers,many have had good success with them.

jon3950 on here has had them in the flinders and other places,no problems at all.

Keeping pressures/speed correct seems to reduce issues.

Had a set fitted for a recent trip Melbourne to Alice via Tibooburra, Strezleki Track, Oodonadata Track, Dalhousie, Uluru, Kings Canyon and Palm Valley via Boggy Hole. No problems - no difference in road noise compared with OEM Goodyears and a tougher construction (extra ply layer). Bought them from tyresales for $270 each and had them fitted locally for $25 each. Will soon swap them back for the OEMs as they only have 20k wear on them, but will use in preference once the Goodyears have worn or next outback trip, whichever comes first.

I have taken a set of Pirelli ATR through flinders and Arkaroola(?). Puncured one on one of the side tracks. I think this could happen to any tyre out there. I still think they are good tyres. I now run Hankook DynaPro. I swapped as i had some aquaplaning with half worn pirelli ATRs. Have towed a van most of the way around australia including rocky tracks and so far so good. They are slightly noisier. This is on a 2010 D4 with 19 inch standard rims.

So Roverlander, how would you compare the Dynapros to the Pirellis... any significant stand out for one or the other? Are yours 255/55/19?

I did many of the Flinders tracks including all of Brachina Gorge, which is made mostly of sharp rocks, on cheapish 20" Nexen road tires... The tread looked a bit chipped at the end of our two week holiday up there, but the tires were still very quiet on the road.


A good AT would've been perfect, you should have no trouble at all.

Thats what I think as well. Plenty of feed back re grabbers and coopers not so much on the Pirelli's. That in of itself might mean something.
