Thread: Introducing "LANCE"

First mock up of chain driven spare wheel winch to replace the troublesome wire cable winch. It will also be accessible from under the vehicle, removing the hassle of access when the cargo area is full.
The winch is off a Triton, though most Jap utes use a similar set up. I will use the guide nose off the factory winch (which the chain will pass through below the pulley).

I still have to fab up the bracket at the wheel. I will use the T bar and spring off the factory setup.
I have not decided on what system to use for the drive shaft yet. Either a 1/2" square drive for a socket wrench etc, or fab up a holed tab so the standard jack handle can be used.

Good work Chris.
Somewhere in the bowels of my shed I have one of those,I was going to put it on my Ser3 which never happened.
If I see it I can pass it on as I will never use it,I intend fitting a LRT oneday.

I also fitted up a Front Runner rear ladder today. Damn that thing has some sharp edges, it made mince meat of any paint it touched when I was wriggling it around to fit it up .

The ladder rungs have the welds open at the ends. Do others have this? I can see positives and negatives to manufacturing like this??

The holes are to allow water to escape/evaporate.
If you don't do that expansion/contraction will suck water in thru a weld,unless its 100% air tite.

How was the fit at the bottom mount behind the light unit? Mine was poor.

Hi Scott. No it doesn't exactly fit to the shape of the top of the light unit and I had to wind the 7 bolts up real tight to bring the plate to a shape so that the light unit sat flatish.

Same issue for me, to the extent I was uncomfortable with putting that much tension on the screws for fear of pulling through. This is why I silastic'd the joint. Micro switch for tailgate release can apparently be changed without disassembly of the light console, although I haven't tried that myself. Anyway, hopefully will never need to break the silastic bead.

Spare wheel chain winch all finished up. Works a treat.

Apart from stealing the spring and T-bar at the wheel end, no cutting or drilling of the vehicle was required. The winder uses the std jack hook to wind the mechanism. I made it yellow so that someone who was not familiar with the setup would have half a hope of finding the winch when they discovered it missing from the cargo area!

Need for access to the cargo area now gone. Rear seats removed today and now to fab up a false floor with hatch ready for a trip at Easter.....
