Thread: D2 V8 to a D3 fuel comparison

I can tell you about the D3 V6 from 4 years experience. 16's around town with a VERY light foot but anywhere up to 22 if not. On sand you're looking at 28+.

I loved the D3 and, driven carefully, I thought the economy was acceptable for the price paid ($64k for a 2007 SE) and its capabilities.

The V8 (from what I've heard/read) is more economical. The V6 is a reliable motor.

Im at the other end of what you are starting,spent a long time researching.
From what others say the V8 uses slightly less fuel than the V6 petrol.
That V6 is also used in the USA in the Explorer and Mustang,look into issues with its peculiar valvetrain mechanisms that cause expensive failure if the oil changes are neglected.
You will be told how sweet the V8 sounds,its not the BMW unit used in Range Rover,its an all alloy Jaguar motor.
Whatever you choose the gearbox needs to be serviced and swaped to the steel pan.

I have a V8 D3 with over 200K


A trip to Brissie airport from the Sunny coast = pretty well flat road, no stopping on freeway and 110km/hr and some 100km/hr nets as low as 9.8 lits/100km to 11lits/100km both on the dash and confirmed using fill tank / reset tripmeter and after trip - refill = no of litres / kms on tripmeter.


Round the nth sunny coast average of 12lits/100km - again, flat generally no lights as mostly roundabouts (pure genius no stopping for no reason BS as with lights). Driving style has a lot to do with these results as getting it moving from a stop seems to be the critical factor .. I only let it wind up I don't accelerate as such.


On Beach Average of 13-15 using good tides with 30 - 25 in the rubber.


soft sand at high tide = "Skys the limit" ^/100km


Towing 6M trailerable Minibridgedeck Catamaran GVM 1.1 tonnes on highway - round 14 - 15 lits/100km depends on terrain. This is a low profile boat which is a bit wider (@2.4Meters) and just a bit above the Disco - A caravan with its windsail would be a different prospect I would expect

I generally don't use the dash readout other than for advice as to how much consumption (approx.) 'right now' ... most of the quotes above have been averages from various trips using the fill tank before trip / reset Trip meter and then refill and divide litres used by distance.


I don't bother any more as I know the dash readout is reasonably close +/- and after all, who really gives a crap .. if you wanna go somewhere - you have bought the ticket - enjoy the ride and believe me I DO enjoy the ride.


Basically the petrol is very economical when compared to a Tojo petrol or a Patrol so its a bonus having the Luxury on top.


go for it .. get a V8 they are awesome IMHO.

My D3 V8 gets around 12L-100 hwy 15/16-L-100 around town 18L-100 towing a 1700kg camper both the hwy readings are at speed limit (100 + 110) with cruise on. i heard from a close source that if you tow a 1700kg camper at 130kph from Hillston to Cobar it will creep up to 20/21L-100. I have the main muffler removed (still got 1 muffler and 2 resonators), i probably wouldn't recommend doing that as the sound you get makes the right foot go down way more than it needs to

I have a V6 petrol, straight after the service I got 11.8 for the first week, after the weekend and ever since I seem to be between 12.6 and 12.7 on the speedo. My run to work is pretty straight and I average around 58 kl/hr over a month. Haven't towed the camper yet and I haven't done any off road work yet. I looked at V8's when I was buying this D3 about a month ago and they were still over $25k - $26k I got mine for significantly less than this and it is in good nick with a FSH. The V8 could well be more economical however you can buy a lot of the fuel consumption difference for $10k.

Funny you should say that.My local auto electrician is a long time Landy owner,he bought one the last of the D3 V6 SE,asked him why he didnt get a diesel,esepecially as he commutes Narrogin to Dunsborough every weekend.His response was I can buy lots of petrol with the price difference.Pretty sure his latest Landy a RRS is a V8 petrol.Dont see him too much now he has retired and his boy runs the show.He was a Landy fan too,has defectected to Tojo V8 utes instead of the 130 they ran
