    Intelligent Stop Start

    Hi Folks,

Picked up our new RRS 2014. First vehicle with so called intelligent stop start. We live in a regional area and rarely drive in stop start traffic in built up areas.

Functionally it works quickly and it seems you are able to control it a bit with brake pedal, throttle and steering wheel movements. BUT I would like to be able to turn it off and leave it off. Disabling after every start up is a pain in the backside.

I understand the politics and the desirability of stop start but I am curious and maybe a little paranoid about the future costs of starter system repairs. Starter motor and ring gear particularly. I imagine that the starter system will get a flogging and it will be a 'when' problem, not an 'if' problem. The maintenance costs no doubt will be considerable.

I wonder if anyone could chime in with thoughts about being able to turn this off, and on, permanently.

    Cheers, Simmo

I would be surprised if there wasn't an option in the CCF to enable/disable the function, similar to my D4's steering lock which is now disabled. You would have to find somewhere with an aftermarket diagnostic tool that supports your vehicle, which might be hard to find so early in the new model run.

Edit: Is there a service menu function to disable it?

No service function to disable that I can find, it has a disable switch on the centre console but it defaults to on at every start up.

Have you tried holding the button down for an extended time - sometimes that's how to reverse the default on some of these functions

I don't know but suspect that the car's ability to meet some Enviro requirement or another will mean that it can't be de-selected easily.

I know what you mean I've had a car with it and it's a bit painful in the city stop start all the time move the wheel it starts just lift off the brake a little bit and it starts drove me up the wall. And I'm hearing about the button should be able to fully disabled not having to press it every start up that's annoying!!

The parts concerned on stop start vehicles have been upgraded to take the extra stress. Just read a trade article in the very subject. Won't stop them from packing up eventually though.

My D4's EUCD system file has an entry for start/stop (fitted/not fitted/undefined). Whether your vehicle takes notice of its entry would need to be tried but my D4 hasn't operated its steering column lock since it was set to "not fitted".

An alternate solution would be to install a little module powered from an ignition power source to operate the disable switch once. The switch most likely only grounds a signal wire so very simple to implement.

Would LRA jump on the issue of Installing that little module as a way of voiding warranty??

Possibly if it was still fitted and someone was trying to discover why stop/start no longer worked. If a message is shown they would probably replace the switch then the module (perhaps the bcu) controlling stop/start too.

Maybe just get into the habit of pressing the switch straight after the engine starts. I suspect it wouldn't be long before it was an automatic action.
