UHF wiring - power from elec trailer brakes

    Hi guys,

I need to get around to installing my UHF. I already have a redarc electric brake controller that is wired to the cranking battery (i have 2nd bat. also). The positive goes to the positive terminal and negative to the earth point near the battery.

With the UHF (UNiden 8060nb) could i just connect it to the same power supply? There is a warning sticker that says"this unit can only be installed in negative ground battery systems. connect the red to the positive terminal and the black to the negative terminal of the battery" - does the negative have to go to the negative terminal? or if i use the same cable from the trailer brakes suffice (ie the earth point).

I appreciate that if i wired to the 2nd battery i could leave the UHF on while the engine was off - which i think would be an excellent idea. I am just concious of getting all these cables through the firewall. It was quite a job getting the cabling for the 2nd battery, and the trailer brakes power through the hole. I am not sure if there is going to be enough space for anything else? I also need to get the antenna cable through there as well, and the wiring loom for the switch for the LED lightbar.

    thoughts?

    thanks

    Simon

So in regards to the UHF, last time I wired one I ran it straight off the cigarette lighter power behind it. This means that there's 12V with the key in acc. Position.

Other than that i honestly haven't investigated wiring and holes in the firewall yet.

    Hi Simon,

You have several Earth connectors behind the lower rh panel ( inner forward of door ) I would run the positive direct to your second battery, but ensure it is fused or has a circuit breaker.

There are a couple of points to go through the firewall. From memory they are above the top of the pedals. It may be easier to spot them from the engine side, and feed a wire through from that side, then pull it back with your power feed attached. Dependant on where you have to go in the engine bay for your Aux. battery, the wires can generally be fed along behind the rearmost engine bay rubber seal. It can be pulled off easily, and replaced once the wire(s ) are tucked behind.

If you want to piggy back off the fuse panel you can buy piggy back fuses, saves cutting wires. You need the mini size for D4.
My UHF that is waiting to be fitted says do not use the cigarette lighter as the power sorce as it may cause inteference on the radio.

    thanks - i didn't know these existed.

I think though, maybe i should wire it to the 2nd battery, as in the long run this may prove beneficial - provided of course i remember to turn it off!!

So on that basis i need to try to get wires into the cabin again. The previous hole I used for the traxide kit and trailer brakes is now full.

Admiral mentioned there maybe other holes. I can see a rubber grommit over to the right above the steering shaft. Can this be used? (see pic). how can you access from inside the cabin?

I can't see any others though?

Yes, you can use that one. It comes out on top of the brake pedal linkage from memory. It is easier to locate if using a probe from the engine bay, as you also have to push the wire through a bit of insulation.

Once you have established the location, and the proximity of other wires etc, it is advisable to punch or burn a hole through the grommet, as stretching it can cause it to tear. Use a dab of silicone to seal once you have your wires through.
