I asked about this and they really said it was not necessary as the engines were run in before installation and the oil was changed then. When it came to its second service I was at about 18000km and asked again if it would be done. I'd driven to Adelaide and back and thought it was time. I was on free services deal for first 3 and I was concerned they might not do it because they were paying for it but they told me they were going to do it and they do it at the major service as a matter of course.

Synthetics at 12 months / 10,000km wont be having an issue at all...

Damn, synthetics at 24,000km nowadays are going fine.

just get it done at 12,000km or 12 months

Have a look at the service interval for arduous use and the definition of arduous use. Seems to me that city driving, towing, off road driving, driving in hot conditions and driving in dusty conditions are all arduous use and require more frequent servicing. Looks like just driving the car in Australia is arduous use to me! I think the EPB drums, for example, require servicing every day when driven off road, according to the service schedule.

I get mine serviced at Jorden Rovertech every 10,000km, or a bit more when touring. I usually do more than 10,000km in the two or three weeks we go touring every year, so I wait until I get back on those trips. 10,000km is about three or four months driving in my car. Before I got it the car was driven in Sydney and serviced every 24000km. Now coming up to 170,000 and the engine seems OK. Just uses too much fuel compared with others on here and always has since I have had it.

If your vehicle's consumption is realistic then perhaps the previous owner had the fuel consumption calc adjusted. That was one of the first changes I did to mine when I got a Faultmate Extreme.

So the new D90 gets it's first new oil at 20,000 ?

Just like the D4 which had its first oil change at 23k

Oil sampling showed the oil was fine and no wear elements out of spec.

I maintain my vehicles - I will not over service them for no good reason.

It gets confusing for us without your technical expertise, or access to oil testing etc. the book says 20,000 for example, with the usual caveats, and then the dealer sticks on a label saying 10,000 . So we may waste some time & money to err on the side of caution, plus to get some assurance that bits are not falling off ex factory.

No, I'm talking about real consumption, not the reduced amount the computer tells me it is using. Also, with the 285 tyres I am running the odometer is now reading well under the distance actually travelled whereas the speedo is now exact. With stock tyres the speedo was out and the odo was exact. I have to adjust for the tyre size when calculating the fuel consumption but the computer is still telling me I am using much less fuel than is actually used.

    Oil change

Just had the MY11SDV6SE done last week after owning it for only 2 weeks, from the logbook it had not been done for about 10 months and at least 10,000kms since the last one. Plus we are also planning a 8000km touring trip next month. I am planning to change engine oil every 6 months, being about 12000km, and TC's every year. I think that's pretty much in line with LR requirements.

Re cost, as part of the 90K service (total cost $465), the oil alone made up about $140 of that, plus filter and labour of course.
