    D4 20" AT tyre feedback

    Hi,

I have a 2013 D4 (with 20" Black rims) and am now interested in upgrading the rubber. I have really been quite happy with the Pirelli Pzeros, but just want some more profile and (hopefully) less than $500+/tyre. I cant seem to find any specific/recent discussions on this topic.

I have seen the GOE tyre guide for LR rims, but I just wanted to hear from anyone that has actually used some larger profile 20" tyres.

I am condisering the following 275/55/20 and would appreciate any feedback on:
    - Nitto Terras
    - Pirelli Scorpion ATRs
    - Cooper AT3 or Zeons
    - Wrangler Duratracs
or any others that people have used and would recommend

FYI, I have considered getting the 18" GOE rims, but cant ATM afford the $4000+ (inc tyres), so I am hoping to get more use out of the 20" LR rims.

    Cheers,
    Andrew

According to my calculations the diameter would be about 810mm compared with 800 for 285 60 18 and 763 for the stock tyres. Since 285 60 18 tyres just rub on the body seems in the rear mudguard and the chassis extensions just behind the front wheels, you would need to make modifications to fit the size you are after. Compare the diameter with the other tyres on GOE's web page to see what may be required to fit them, if it is possible at all.

    Thanks Bob.

I saw the GOE tyre guide and according to it, both the 285/60/18 and 275/55/20 should be Ok but the 814.7 diameter do Rub - not much margin, I know

When I spoke to Gordon he also suggested it was more the width (285) that could be the problem, thats why I was after some other people's real expereinces with the largest/best tyre for the 20" rims.

    Cheers,
    Andrew

Adrew, just FYI, I noted on the UK (Disco3/D4 etc sites) they are saying that General Tires are putting a 275/55/20 Grabber AT2 tyre on the market from early next year,
    cheers

I just took my 285/60/18 tyres and rims off on the weekend to get the last bit of wear out of the stock 255/55/19 tyres that have been in the shed for a couple of years. As my son says, the car now looks really "gay" with the small tyres and shiny silver rims. It doesn't look like my car at all and I will be putting the nice grey GOE rims and larger tyres back on for good by Christmas. I feel "gay" driving it now as well. It just looks too bling!

Anyway, the rear inner guards are worn through on the seams as I mentioned, there is rubbing on the inner guard at the front left and the chassis extensions behind the front wheels are nice and rusty due to being rubbed by the tyres, mainly in reverse. I can't see how you would fit 10mm bigger diameter tyres at the front at all as the 285/60/18 tyres are a perfect snug fit. The rear would be better if you flatten the seam as Gordon says on his site but the slight rubbing doesn't worry me so I haven't bothered with that.

The 275/55R20 should fit, albeit with a fair amount of rubbing and would be better with rods fitted. They're smaller than the 275/65R18's I used to run.

    Cheers,

    Gordon

Regarding brands not so much sizes as you were asking for feedback, you will pick which size you like.

I have had a set of 20" Nitto Terra Grapplers on the D4 for over 7,000 k's and they so far are a great tyre.

Quite, grip well in the wet, handle well in the dry, only had one day playing in the rough stuff on the weekend at The D3/D4/RRS trip but they held up in the rough and worked well for what they are.

Best thing of all is they were only $260 each fitted.

Chances are I won't be doing to much more with them off road though as I am struggling to get my head around doing the stuff we do off road with 20" rims. But as they are a good road tyre I am more than happy to keep them on as a very day driver plus they look way better then standard highway tyres.

As far as I am concerned its only a short matter of time if it keeps getting used off road before rims and tyres are wrecked. So before the D4 gets used in anger again off road I will be investing in different sized rims, however that is my choice and its up to others to make their own decisions.
    Cheers,
    Terry

Choices are Gordon's 18's, OEM 19's or fit the smaller D3 and early 2.7 D4 brakes and 17's.

Right now I am not seriously considering making any changes to the D4, for now I am happy keeping it as a every day driver.
    Cheers,

Would changing brake sizes particularly to smaller ones, require an engineering certificate? I would be very worried about insurance if doing that, I would think it would be a very quick way to get your insurance claim denied after an accident.
