    Strange noises after dirty weekend.

So after the awesome AULRO Lithgow weekend, which involved quite a few underbody bumps etc I now have some odd noises.

Changing heights on the suspension seems to initiate it, it will start with a kind of creaking noise as it changes height and then for a little bit afterwards a sort of regular knocking sound, it does seem to change with revs to a point although not 1:1 tied to revs, at one point it settled into a very regular knocking at some traffic lights and shifting it to neutral made it go away and it didn't come back when I went back into drive.

It just seems to go away after a bit and doesn't seem to reoccur unless I change the height again.

I have a a fairly basic look underneath and there is some damage to the rear bumper plastic bracket on the bottom edge where a small log came up and knocked half my bumper off at one point. Most of it snapped back into place but it is still damaged. This may account for the noise but is seems odd that it so closely related to change in height and that it goes away.

    Any ideas?

I will take in in for a service and get the bumper repaired in a few weeks but I don't have time to take it in for at least the next two weeks.

I've had quite a few different noises in my years of owning a D3.
Squeaks may occur after driving through muddy water when the water dries it can leave behind dirt and dust in various bushes including suspension arm bushes but more likely anti roll bar bushes. Sometimes a good drive in rainy weather can help or even a good hose.
On the rear suspension arm there is a bottom balljoint behind the wheel which can seize over time resulting in a very annoying creaking noise.
Get someone to change the suspension height while you walk around the car to help isolate which corner it is.
Bouncing the suspension can also pin point the source.

    Good Luck finding it!

    Aarrgghh suspension noises

As Rich says, a good blast of water under the car would be my first staring point.

I had the same problem a while back around Newnes plateau but more squeaks and groans at low speeds.
A squirt of silicone spray on the anti roll bar bushes sorted it out.

Odd that you'd have clicking noises that rise and fall with your engine speed...

Not something jammed in your engine bay rubbing on your visco fan or accessory drive?

Does your car have dynamic response? ISTR Dynamic Response vehicles have another hydraulic pump mounted to the engine's accessory drive.

I doubt that the following are your problems but you can get a very loud compressor noise if you have gravel stones jammed between the GOE compressor protector plate and the compressor case. You can also get a strange thumping noise from sand (or mud) filling up the gap between the exhaust pipes and the chassis / body above the transmission cross member area/ engine protection pan / transmission protection. This is more of a problem in sandy WA but perhaps you could have mud and grid stuck up there from the outing you did.

Both of these are fixed by lots of high pressure water sprayed in the affected areas.

Thanks everyone for the good suggestions. I am going to get the guerney under it this weekend and see if that helps, the noise is definitely towards the rear and left so will pay particular attention to the compressor and GOE guard and see if there is stuff inside there and up around the reader suspension.

Fingers crossed that's all it is.

Well most of the noise is definitely the compressor rattling inside the compressor guard. If I reach up in behind and grad the air outlet connection on the back and stabilize the pump the noise stops. I haven't had time to take the GOE guard off yet, but I think it is a combination of the tight fit with the new compressor, still some dirt in there I wasn't able to hose out and also a hit to the guard which I think may have bent it a bit, I hope it hasn't also broken a compressor mount.

I think though there may be another less regular knock from somewhere else though.
