D4 MY2014 Halogen Upgraded to HID

    Hi All

Just a quick post to say, today I upgraded the OEM halogen projectors to HID using HIDS4U (disco3 forum sponsor)
    55w HID kit.

Upgrade went smoothly. Sadly you cannot fit the 55w ballast in the OEM space under the light, they are about 5mm too big.
I've mounted mine behind the light assembly. No wire cutting, and I have run the light wires through the rubber cap on the back. I will get a couple of spare ones in case I have to drop back to halogens for the stealer at any point.

They work great, much brighter the the HIR2 halogens, had to tweak the aim of the lights down slightly as they were setup as possum spotters.

Not edited the CCF, though I could if anyone thinks it necessary ?? The new 2014 halogen light assemblies have the shutter style high beams, so a great cut off from low beam to high.

The 9006 bulb kit fits into the 9012 HIR2 hole perfectly with no mods.

Very happy, as I was missing the xenon power from my old D3.

Contrary to other people I don't think the 55w is too bright, though we are in the middle of nowhere so more power =good.

Hope this helps anyone considering the upgrade.

Used the disco3 forum discount code and got 25% off too.

    Cheers

Any photos? I just had some issues with another brand and have gone back to upgraded H7 bulbs. I am concerned on 'cutting' OEM headlights as planning more remote travels and worried about water and dust egress (cape next year!)

I'll get some pics up soon. The new d4 doesn't use the H7 though, it has only one bd for high and low beam.

There is a kit for it though on hids4 u . If you have H7s there is a ballast that fits inside the headlamp apparently. So no water issues.
Initially that's what they thought the new 2014 car had in it.
My kit required No cutting of car looms at all.
Chose the kit I did because they sponsor disco3 forum ,

have upgraded lots of d3/4 s before. And they have kits made for the specifically with CANbus error correction.

Hi Guys, First post from a newby MY13 D4 owner.

After reading through these pages I ordered a 35w projector bulb kit from HIDS4U as well as a 55w reflector bulb kit to replace my high beam.

Fitted both kits the other day without much fuss and the low beam is huge improvement. The high beam unit suffers a couple of issues, firstly the warm up time, which I was aware of and secondly the bulb for a "reflector" installation has a shield painted on the glass. This shield is apparently to prevent light scatter due to the brightness of the light, according to HIDS4U customer support. I inquired as these restrict the majority of light output to only the bottom half of the reflector.

Looking at the high beam lights with the OEM halogen bulbs fitted, the full reflector is utilized, after fitting the HIS4SU kit the top ~ 120? of the reflector is dark. The result is less light output than could be achieved if the 'projector' type bulb is selected. The only visible difference difference between the two bulb types is the painted on shield.

So my tip, if ordering your HID upgrades from HIDS4U do not completely follow the recommended purchasing options. If purchasing two kits (i.e. to replace both low and high beam) then select the projector type bulbs for both.

BTW, I'm pleased to say that the kits installed without any fuss, and I have no concerns with water or dust ingress as the grommets fit well. Also the 35w bulbs are plenty bright for the low beam application and a huge improvement over the OEM H7 55w halogens. No adjustment was needed as the light beam pattern is the same as before.

Also another tip, from my discussions with them, apparently the bulb does not dictate the wattage, this is dictated by the ballast...

HIDS4U is currently out of stock of the 'projector' 5k H7 bulbs, but when they have stock I'm going to replace the supplied bulbs to improve the high beam units.

They have offered to exchange the shielded bulbs, however the postage cost makes that a wasted exercise. Instead given that the bulbs are the same for the 35w and 55w application, I'm going to order four bulbs, two for spares, as this gives me free postage at a similar cost to me posting back the shielded bulbs.

    Hi Doddsy

I am thinking about upgrading my late 2014 D4 halogen 9012 bulbs to 55W HID as you have done. Can you tell me what discount code you used (by PM if you want). I used the VAT free code that I found but it does not seem to work. Customer service from HIDS4U seems to be very good. I got answers to my questions within a few hours of emailing last evening.

    Thanks
    Mike

Thanks for the write up Doddsy,

I have ordered a 35W kit. The standard halogens are a tad underwhelming when on a dirt road with no road markings to follow. I figured the 35W combined with my cheepie light bar would be a huge improvement but without offending approaching drivers.

    Cheers
