Thread: Engine Sound Deadening - 2.7 TDV6

Whenever I go in my wife's Diesel Merc I ask her "given the sound, how you tell if there is something wrong with the motor" ... always earns me a scowl at very least ...

Given I have, yet again, another water seepage issue (from a brand new genuine part) I'm might drive around for a week or so with my engine cover off ... it might improve the sound

Engine covers are just bling , realy don't serve any worth while function . Took mine off so I can an eye on the motor and space.s for leaks and signs of problems before they become big problems .

I remember once picking up the D2 from the dealers,and driving along thinking geez this thing has some engine noise.Sure enough they had left the cover on the engine off...

Not only does it stop noise,it also reduces bonnet heat.

Engine covers reduce outside cabin noise.

They also stop water splash across the electrics up the top...

I'd be thinking the purpose of the LR Discovery engine cover is to not only provide sound attenuation but also to control air flow around the engine. And of course it provides a 'finished look' to the engine bay on what is a luxury vehicle after all.

I replaced my insulation in 2009, with Clarke rubber insulation, see for how I did it. I think the insulation has several purposes, sound deadening is one and protecting the paint from too much heat on the bonnet is another.

Thanks Ryall - great info! You've got me inspired....

How is the Clark rubber insulation going 5 years down the track? And do you remember it making any noticeable difference to the engine noise?

Still holding up well and re noise I cant remember but it sounds the same as a mates D3.
