Thread: External Rear Vision Mirrors Popping Out

This has happened to me. I used silastic to fix it (I used the rv sealant type as that is what I had handy), works fine. My mirror has been like this for at least three years. Have had to redo silastic once, mirror fell out but it's wires stopped it from falling into the road. $150 buys a lot of silastic !

All the top clips broke but the bottom ones are OK - I still had the top centre clip so I have superglued it back to the mirror back and then supported it further with some plasti-bond.

When the lot was dry I covered the top half where it touches the bit that moves inside the mirror housing with silastic - the genuine dow corning stuff and I have just pushed the mirror back in.

It clicked in and stayed there so I assume the glued repair is holding - it only has to hold long enough for the silastic to go off and it should not then move at all. As the bottom is still held with the clips it should be able to be removed at a later date if required without wrecking the motor section.

I guess I will find out how well it has worked after I have left it to all cure.

I am just a bit disappointed in how small and easily broken the top clips are.

It's a pretty lame design really.

You've taken a lot more trouble than me, that's for sure, so should be fine ! I just put a big dollop of silastic on it and shoved it in and left it to dry. Not one of my finest repairs to be honest.

And as I said, (assuming you have them on yours) the wires will stop the mirror from falling too far and getting smashed on the road if the repair fails.

Thanks for the input - yes have the wires - the stealer says they are for the mirror heaters and he says my mirror is the heated type but they do not work. The Dealer says they should heat when I use the program defrost button or just the rear demister but the frost has always stayed on the mirrors - but the wires do stop you loosing $150 of mirror.
