    Brake Master Cylinder Noise?

    Hi Guys,

Interesting one I noticed yesterday with my 2012 D4 HSE. When stationary in neutral or park (eg no gear engaged) when I press on the brake pedal I get a clicking/clunking noise under the gear selector which I can feel through the gear handle and same again when I release. The noise is quite noticeable and sounds like its coming from just underneath the gear selector cover. I get a similar noise when I then release the brake pedal. It does not do it when in drive or reverse and I apply/release the brake.

I am quite pedantic so I know it's not been there before.

    Any suggestions??

I get that on both of my autos.

    Just a click though.

I thought it was some type of release so that you can move the selector into gear ?

    Hi brett,

the more i think of it as its a gear selection thing combined with the brake maybe its a solenoid?

However it seems louder than normal, for the fact that I have picked up on it.

It's the gear selector interlock solenoid. So you can't choose DRIVE, REVERSE etc without putting your foot on the brake first.

It only sounds noisy now because you've noticed it, as you rightly said.

Nothing at all to worry about - they all do it.

I have the same noise on my D3. Only noticed it after changing the brake light switch.

I was wondering exactly what that was too so thanks for answering the question Rich!
