    ZF Gearbox second service

    Gday All,

Done my first service with steel pan replacement at 72,000ks and am about to do my 2nd at 120,000ks.

Where are people getting the service kit from. Tried ebay, plenty of options if you go thru the ford section , but different story when you try going thru the D3 section.

I don't need the oil as I already have it, I just want the filter and the gasket.

    Cheers Ean

    Hi Ean,
    Like this one?
Genuine ZF6HP26 Automatic Transmission Service KIT ZF 6HP Ford Falcon Territory | eBay

According to this seller (and I recall he was advertising on the AULRO Verandah as well), the genuine gaskets are green, and the genuine steel sumps have a drain hole.

    Cheers,
    Rob

Yep that looks like it, there were also some advertised for as low as $35 so there is a big difference in genuine and non genuine .

Now I am totally confused - if the steel sump has to be dropped to change the oil and filter why do you need a steel sump? Why not just stay with the plastic sump?

I thought the advantage of the steel sump was that all the work could be some with it in place.

    Cheers

The filter is moulded to the plastic sump, so the only way to change the filter is to remove that and use a steel pan, then you can change the oil and the filter. you can change the oil without removing the steel sump, you only need to remove it if changing the filter.

So does your steel sump have a sump plug?

Yes, but I want to change the filter as well so it's sump off.

Further to what Ean has sid, DO NOT be tempted to use the non branded steel sump and aftermarket gaskets....Also, there are some genuine ZF sumps with no drain plugs, I am fitting a new 6HP26 to a G6E FG falcon ATM and it has a ZF stamped steel sump, with no drain plug at all. Incidentally, this trans has failed at 205,000km due to no servicing AT ALL. This filled for life is total rubbish.

    Hi Justin,
Right - the Ford Falcon sumps from ZF don't have drain plugs, but the BMW X5 sumps from ZF do have them.
