I'm sure I've read of solenoids being replaced in these boxes.
Hi guys,
As we now know the Ford Territory TDV6 can be easily fitted to replace a stuffed L/R engine.
But how about the ZF Auto box?
I think possibly yes, the only caveat being you would need to swap over the Mechatronics from your old box into the new one.
Anyone know anything in regard to this?
My auto is sadly on the way out, shudder and slipping and an occasional fault:
PO741 - Torque Converter Solonoid stuck off.

Unfortunately that's probably a valve body or torque converter issue and not a complete trans issue, so if you replaced the trans and not the mechatronic, you would more than likely experience the same issue, or the wear in the valve body will cause the trans to wear in the same way yours has, until you experience the same symptoms again. There may be no physical problem with your trans yet (although the shuddering will eventually cause problems with the rest of the trans).
Is that an intermittent or a permanent fault? My RRS occasionally gets the same fault when I'm towing and the car gets a particularly big jerk from the trailer. Rarely have a problem with treg style hitches, but ball hitches I get it quite often when towing heavy but empty trailers (car trailer etc). It is followed by "Transmission Fault" on the dash and the torque converter unlocking itself for the remainder of the trip - since we have pretty high stall converters, the revs go all over the place! I don't get shuddering but I do get vibration and noise.. Two LR workshops have told me not to worry about it until the tacho needle starts twitching at constant speed, then replace the converter ASAP, but I'm now planning on stripping the whole box and seeing what else needs doing.
If you can go without the car for a bit I'd suggest removing the mechatronic and having it inspected and repaired if possible by a specialist - I don't know of any here in Australia but that doesn't mean they don't exist - someone like Sonnax in the US/UK I'm thinking.

I understand why you'd be looking at replacement boxes as that's what the dealer would suggest, but surely it's ridiculous to replace a whole transmission at $6-7K just because of one fault?
Hey Gents,
Give Bob Traynor a call, he is the absolute guru for automatic transmissions (let alone the fact that he is also a long time land rover nut) he is based in Cohuna Vic and I believe he overhauls all of Ritter's transmissions? I had my disco serviced by him a few times when I still had it and can't recommend him enough. His number is 03 5456 2978.
He would know definitely at the drop of a hat I would say.
Let me know how you go,
Cheers.
Its seems that replacing the solenoids (all at once is often done) is quite straight-forward in these boxes without the need to touch the mechatronics valve body.

Is anyone able to confirm that there is only 1 box for the V8 whether its for the discovery V8 and the RRS V8 and V8 supercharged?
a V8 will gearbox fit all 3 models ??
Thanks
Steve
Thanks Gords, well I rang Bob and had a chat.
Yes it sounds like he is a Guru on Autos.
I'll post more info in the Auto sticky thread.
Interesting stuff I learnt today.
